1/ Remain uninvolved. This would have been the correct technical response if harsh and inhumane.
2/ Advise/support the 'North' Vietnamese, who, bottom-line, were fighting for Vietnamese independence from France. This would have been the correct response from a humanitarian/freedom-support point of view.
or
3/ Support the French-controlled puppet 'South' Vietnamese, thereby supporting and perpetuating Colonial rule in Vietnam. Neither humane, nor politically desirable.
Sadly, the irrational fear and misunderstanding of communism that the USA suffers from, no doubt combined with a bit of pocket-piddling left-over from WW2 days, blinded the US and its allies to the fact that, IN THIS INSTANCE the right thing to do would have been to assist HCM, not fight him.
He realised this himself, and actually asked the US for assistance to help free Vietnam from French rule. They told him to blow it out his ass. So, just what sort of response did they expect from him after that?
So, was 'our' involvement in Vietnam a war-crime? Well, no, not per se.
But we DID choose the wrong side, and it was entirely due to the FUD (that the Seppolians swallow as fact) surrounding communism. Hell, even today they (AND many of YOU) can't even distinguish between socialism and communism. No, they are not the same thing at all.
OH, BTW, don't DARE to twist this to imply that I have anything but the utmost respect for those who actually fought in Vietnam. On BOTH sides.
Oh, nor am I a communist. KAT Try reading this Book "VIETNAM THE AUSTRALIAN WAR" BY PAUL HAM Instead of trying to REWRITE HISTORY like the MORONS ON THIS SITE That's a good book freddy But they wont read it to dumb
