no  I don't me WE.. as in Earth... but as the Milky Way We are in a spiral galaxy, which is moving at incalculable speed..  ( for me)  and our spiral arm IS moving closer to denser space.

OOhhhh so .. I thought when you said orbit,  you meant Earth orbit.

The moon is apparently pockmarked and asteroids hit the earth a lot too but we have been here there have been few. It has to happen sometime hey. The atmosphere protects us somewhat from the smaller ones because they burn up.

A. Has the presence of the moon through the ages meant that the Earth was...

1.less exposed to meteoroid impact (because they hit the moon instead or were subject to the slingshot effect of the moon's gravity),

2. more exposed (because of the larger gravitational target)
or

3. There was no net difference because the two effects cancelled out.

In your answer, take into account that the Moon's orbit  has gradually drifted away further from the Earth and that the numbers of meteoroids decreased dramatically in the first billion years of the solar system.

B. Develop an iterative, multi-variable hillclimbing based  algorithm to demonstrate that the meaning of life is actually 42.

(Show all calculations)   Grin

I dont know since Im not an astronomer. Some lesson @ school had something to do with the atmosphere burning up the asteroids. We have had just as many as the moon over the eons though apparently. It was a long time ago. Go look it up yourself if you are interested.

In fact i have thought about going back to uni and doing astronomy but its too expensive and i got put off when my telescope was stolen. Its prolly too much math anyway.

They're both different words for the same thing. The only difference is where you find them. All asteroids are in space and they only become a meteor if they enter the atmosphere of another object. If the meteor survives atmospheric friction and hits the surface it becomes a meteorite.

If an asteroid such as 2012 .AD104  or whatever it 's nomenclature..  entered our atmosphere....

It would still be an Asteroid..

not a meteor or meteorite...

of course it'd be unlikely that anyone would care to argue about it..! Cheesy

True story.....
I saw a meteorite come in once... close up... well close enough.!

I'll never forget it.

AWESOME POWER.!!  We were all looking at the sky... jaw dropped..!

It came down over SEQ back in hmm ..late 70's early 80's..?..

It was dark...  evening in other words..

We were in a vehicle heading NW from Labrador...back in the days when it was all swamp land till you got to the old Pacific highway....  towards where Helensvale is today. No Gaven Way then.

There were sheoaks and old bush on the small rises before entering the flat stuff.... and the sky lit up.! as we came over them,

The clouds seem to roil in  light patterns, fast...   and everything lit up around us, ...  almost like daylight. ! Shadows sped by.. sound seemed suspended....except for an incipient roar..
The clouds showing the path ... I looked  up and saw this huge ball of fire and light, with brilliant tail..  streaking across the sky above us.. heading Longreach way.

It lasted less than 15 seconds ..(estimate in hindsight) ...

but I will always remember the feelings it aroused in my breast.!!

The sense of the hugeness of the Universe... and my smallness.

Everyone should see something like that.

Yeah, the entire astronomy community says you are wrong.

OK CHARD....
it's a truly huge meteorite.  Apologies...

no way is it like a shooting star... SOB

it looked like it was almost touchable it was so big.

Shooting stars are much smaller pieces of space rock called a meteoroid... burning up quickly as they enter the atmosphere.

Shining object crosses the sky of Washington DC - 02.15.13 - Connected to Russian meteor?

METEOR NEWS UPDATE - Meteors over Russia - New Orleans - San Francisco

Published on Feb 16, 2013
meteor cuba russia japan san francisco meteorite fireball video | An object fell from the sky over central Cuba on Thursday night and turned into a fireball "bigger than the sun" before it exploded, a Cuban TV channel reported Friday, citing eyewitnesses.

Some residents in the central province of Cienfuegos were quoted as saying that at around 8 p.m. local time Thursday (0100 GMT Friday) they saw a bright spot in the sky comparable to a bus in size, China's Xinhua news agency reported citing the Cuban TV station.

The object then turned into a fireball "bigger than the sun," said the witnesses, adding that several minutes later they heard a loud explosion.

One resident told the TV station that his house shook slightly in the blast.

Cuban experts have been dispatched to the area to look for possible remains of the meteor-like object, said the report.

It remains unknown whether the reported phenomenon in Cuba is related to Friday's meteor strike in central Russia, which set off a shockwave that shattered windows and left some 1,000 people injured
