Asylum seekers in general

That the arrival of the boat people makes no difference to the number of people accepted into the community - that boat people are just subtracted from those accepted from overseas' camps.

The difference is the cost, overseas' refugees have already been processed and the poorer, in camps, had already waited a long time..

Then there is the worry about terrorism and diseases.

So, rather than fly into our country as a tourist (with a valid visa and passport) and just walk straight out into the community, you think terrorists would prefer to risk their lives in a boat, enter as unauthorised arrivals and then be detained & subjected to security checks?

Why, exactly, do you think they would do that?   Undecided

Unauthorised arrivals (boat people) are detained (isolated from the public) and then given comprehensive health checks.

Visitors/tourists from other countries, arriving by plane, are not.

Your worry certainly seems to be misplaced.

Just shows that they know that our government is stupid. I guess most of them are also stupid, three didn't even know that Nauru was an island, tried to escape.

maybe in your own head it's a worry .... I don't think to many others are losing sleep over it. When was the last time a (overstaying) tourist was given a health check?

I'll bet every single asylum seeker gets checked while in detention.

"The department has a comprehensive process for checking the health of unauthorised arrivals. An initial health assessment is conducted to identify conditions that will require attention. This assessment includes the collection of personal and medical history, a physical examination and formalised mental health screening and assessment."

the worry is about the waste of precious resources.

there is also the fact that some diseases such as TB which are very common in asia and the middle east, can lie dormant for 20, 30, 40 years and reactivate when other illnesses occur. there is NO way to prevent this (short of turning everyone around)

We have people arriving on planes every day from Asia and the Middle East.

Better get yourself out to the airport and stop them.

To all those complaining about 'boat people'.

Tell us your stories about how you have been personally affected by boat people.

Do you have any living next door?
Have you lost your job?
Do they get between you and your next beer?
Have you worked with any?
Have you been personally introduced to one?

Personal experiences, please.
None of that mates, wifes, cousins, GGgrandfathers second wifes third cousin stuff.
Real, first hand experiences.

Wink

Don't want stories about those who came by plane.
Just boat people.

The relevant UN convention is silent on the ability to charge these boat people a fee or entry surcharge. Why not hit them with a AUD$100,000 establishment fee or charge them the same amount to enter Australia? No money means a quick flight back to the country of origin.

highly unlikely someone would spend 30 years in an airport waiting for their tb to become infectious again
