Why Not Get Rid Of These Useless Machines.

Myki cash grab disables machines

Date
    March 7, 2013

Myki machines at suburban railway stations have been damaged in an apparent attempt to steal cash, sparking a police investigation.     Huh

The damaged machines cannot accept notes, forcing passengers at those stations to top up with credit cards or coins or search for the nearest myki retailer.

Fairfax Media has seen multiple vandalised machines unable to take notes at unstaffed stations along the Upfield line.

Public Transport Victoria did not reveal how many machines have been damaged, saying the matter was "subject to police investigation".

"A number of myki machines at train stations have been vandalised resulting in the machine being unable to accept notes," a spokesman said.     Sad

The spokesman said some of the vandalised machines had already been returned to full service and the system operator, Kamco, was working to fix the rest as quickly a possible.

"Given the matter is subject to an ongoing police investigation, Public Transport Victoria is not in a position to make any further comment," the spokesman said.

The damaged myki machines recall similar problems in the 1990s when thieves broke into Metcard ticketing machines. At the time, Metcard machine theft was so serious and widespread the state government hired security guards to patrol suburban railway stations around the clock.     Sad

Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton said it was inevitable thieves would attempt to break into myki machines at some stage.

"If you're relying on unstaffed machines to get your fares you're always going to run the risk that the machines will get vandalised," he said.

The machines are so horribly slow to process payments. The lines to top up at flinders street in peak hour are totally insane. Each person can take a few minutes (presuming the machine is actually working) to top up. Compared to about 20 seconds or whatever it was for the machine to process and print the old paper tickets. I know they want us to link the card up to our bank accounts, but I'm not super thrilled about that idea, although I guess inconvenience will push me into it soon enough.

Seems to me that it's now more of a pain in the arse to buy and use my ticket than it was before Myki, it's not saving me any money at all (I thought the point of it was that it would charge you for distance, but no it just charges me for a 2 hourly ticket for a relatively short ride into the city) and if anything the trains have gotten worse.

It's such a shame, because I absolutely loved the Oyster system in London and I was really looking forward to having a similar one.

Have their been any positives from the Myki system? How long is it going to take to pay for itself even?

And to think that they paid over 1.6 billion for this garbage but according to John Smith it was money well spent and you should stop your whinging and take it up the arse the next time you need to use it Sad

And it will never pay for itself. The crooks who sold us this rubbish are laughing all of the way to the bank Sad

I don't recall saying that .... you wouldn't be lying again now would you nail? I would never ask you to take anything up the arse ... with your arse one might as well dip it in acid ...

I'm pretty sure  what I said was that every time govt's try to do something like this they fcuks it up ... then they fix it, and you end up with a working system ... it is better than the alternative of doing nothing .

doing nothing was a better option in this case rather than keep throwing good money after bad on a hair brained idea that had no prospects of ever working properly !!

If it aint broke don't fix it !!

saying doing something is better than doing nothing is not the same as saying it was money well spent you dam idiots. Sure money is wasted .. but thats what happens when governments do things , from govt's of all persuasions ... the alternative is that govt's do nothing ... which in my opinion is worse ..

now when you learn to read feel free to respond, otherwise bend over and take it.

yes but someone should be made accountable and not just go onto the next project only to make the same mistakes again and again. That's not acceptable on any accounts especially if they have to borrow this money on the never never. Governments are paid by us to not only do a job but also give us the best value for money they can.

At the very least some questions should be asked. Where did all of the money go ? Why was it so much and what was it actually used for ? Has any been misappropriated or any companies been given favourable treatment ? Some simple questions need to be answered. I worked for a company once and there was a dude in the purchasing department always handing out contracts to the same company which he was part owner of. Needless to say when he was caught out he was dismissed immediately !! In the case of the Myki Mouse ticketing fiasco no investigations have been made after 1.6 billion squandered and the garbage still isn't satisfactory Sad

Something smells rotten in the state of Denmark Sad

the trouble is the libbos NEVER do anything at all because they are always afraid of something becoming obsolete. Then they offload publicly owned essential services and assets onto the private sector and then we get a second rate telecommunications systems that rips everyone off Sad

The problem is that when labor does something which is a good idea somehow they screw it up big time and blow good money after bad Sad

And BTW I don't agree with you about that desal plant. That plant will be needed sooner rather than later and it may not even be enough. We may need to build more in the future. If you don't believe me then you haven't understood that most of Australia is a dessert and is slowly becoming a bigger desert !!
