So far we know Spot flew in an F111. We know this because he told us it was grey and loud.
His wife was in the RAAF that's why he was allowed in and chucked the keys to one.

All perfectly reasonable...

Not sure how the RAAF handles such things, but the US military only grants check rides to A. Politicians (rarely and they better have a damn good reason for using up flight hours), B. Entertainment personalities for public relations purposes, or C. Military presonnel either directly involved with a specific aircraft's maintenance for test purposes or as a reward for exceptional service. In all cases it involves several hours of classroom and practical trainering on emergency procedures and safety breifs as well as a full flight physical that if you fail they probably won't even let you in the same hanger as the aircraft you might've flown in.

Yeah the RAAF is pretty much the same.

Even for military personnel the free rides were rare, F18 were easier to get a flight than an pig.

Best flight I ever had was an Iroquois Gunship (right hand seat), 4 rockets WP & HE and 4000 rounds through the mini guns. Learned that I couldn't fly for sh1t and gunships kick arse.  Grin

A guy I used to know got a ride in an FA18 (he said it was an FA18 - for all i know it was a Macchi) as well as a couple of hours in a flight sim at Williamstown. He was some kind of contractor there and they were given to him as a reward. I think that was sometime during the late 1980s.

I remember reading the story of a military aviation journalist who wrote and article critical of the FA18. The air force offered him a flight and when he was up the pilot performed a very hard bank (almost 90 degrees) and the journo threw up in his mask. But of course he couldn't take it off so he had to swallow it again.

he wrote a followup article praising the aircraft and the pilot.

awesome story!

1. Because on the balance of probabilities, I served in both Gunship squadrons (9 Sqn & 35 Sqn) for over 6 years as a tradesman, also flying choppers isn't that big of a deal. They still don't let civvies do it though.

2. My situation is in the realm of probability, yours is very much not.

3. It is against federal law for any service person or civilian for that matter to lie about their record of service.

4. Unlike you I'm more than happy to tell anyone what it is like to fly Gunships as a non-aircrew person, no need to be coy if you were actually there.  Grin
