We actually offered to second one of our carrier battle groups to the RN for that conflict. Ron and Maggie were total BFFs like that.

not according the Thatchers recently released papers which express her disgust with he american token response and suggestions of letting the falklands go.

Yeah, Reagan refused to commit the US military to directly attack Argentina,  which was what the Iron Lady originally asked for. Instead we offered to help defend the Falklands by putting one of our carriers directly between Argentina and the islands, effectively removing the Argentinean air force as a threat to the RN. Maggie refused that offer because it would cause the public to think the UK couldn't hold its own against a developing world third rate military. So instead we provided logistical support and the sort of intelligence assets the MoD wishes it could have.

I've never been quite sure on the ability or legality of a US President committing US Forces without the approval of Congress.

In 1982, Reagan had the Senate but the Democrats had the House.
There is no way in God's earth they'd back a commitment of US troops into a conflict with zero US interests at stake (bear in mind this is just 7 years after the end of Vietnam).

I know Clinton didn't seek Congress approval in the 90s in Bosnia but I have never been sure how legal that was.

I know a fair bit about US political system, but this one evades me.

The Americans deliberately stalled the vote at the UN and supported the UK on the council shutting down any peace deal.
They also provided supplies, daily information on Argentine movements tracked by US military satellites?

Save sticking US forces in, what else would you have Reagan do?

dont ask me. it is your idol, Thatcher that wrote the papers,  not me.

Depends on the amount of force the president wants to uee and what operational goals he has in mind, but generlly the president can use military force for up to sixty days without congressional approval. That why most of what we do is either short duration or gets tacked on to an existing UN or NATO operation. Also depends on if congress decides to take issue with it, but they rarely do, especially if ground combat involvement is kept below divisional strength. Using the Air Force or Navy to bitchslap someone won't even get a raised eyebrow.

Yeah, I actually learnt some interesting stuff on this thread.

Thank you spot for being such a gutless lying BS artist. Your stupidity and pigheadedness gave an opportunity for others to prove you wrong and inform the rest of us at the same time.

Where exactly have you proven me wrong about anything?

SOB

on every page and in almost every post. you are a laughing stock on here by the idiotic way you carry on.

I flew in a lunar module simulator in the 70s. did you? Nixon was flying in the one next to me.

The only thing you have proven in this thread is that you dont know anything abotu me and that you lie.

Spot, barring some very specific circumstance there's no way in hell you've flown on an F-111. Your wife having been a maintainer doesn't wash simply because you'd waste precious budget money that would better used on flight hours for the aircraft's WSO. Even if by some perversion of all that's holy they cloud afford granting check rides there's an entire squadron of maintainers, half a dozen TV personalities, and every MP that can pass a flight psyical ahead of you in line.

For f*ck's sake, my Pop flew B-52s and B-1Bs for twenty years and niether my Mom, my siblings, or myself ever got to go for a ride in a Buff or a Bone despite both aircraft having spare seating for passengers.

I didnt say she was a maintainer. You assumed that.

Wouldn't matter if she was the personal concubine of Australian equivelent of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff with a directive from the PM counter signed by God Himself. There's no smacking concievable reason for you having been closer to an F-111 than attending airshow, much less getting to sit in the WSO chair during flight operations.

Actually you did, you stated she worked on F111's much earlier in this thread and no, I am not going to find it so you can be proven wrong again.

You stated she worked on Pigs, and only maintainers work on aircraft; do you get where I'm going here?

Spot, there are very few people that "work" on military aircrat, flight crew, personnel involved with aspects of maintaining the aircraft, and ordinance personnel responsible for loading weapons aboard the aircraft. So if your wife wasn't aircrew and wasn't a maintainer then she was ordinance which would make it even less likely you'd have flown.

How about you stop wasting our time and either explain the circumstances that lead to you supposedly flying in an F-111 or just admit you're bullshitting.

And everyone that knows better, myself included, says you're full of poo. Up to you to prove we're wrong since you made such a ridiculous claim. Barring your wife giving the squadron commander a blow job so good he'd be willing to throw his career in the toilet over it there simply isn't a plausible explanation.
