Even if this worst case scenario was true, you should be thankful you're getting it at all.  It's nice to get something I can actually use for my tax dollars instead of just more ivory back scarcthers and new cars for pollies.

only a lefty would see any good in a cost blowout and time delays

If you lot are so happy with your existing internet, you'll obviously be sticking with it so what's it matter if it's running behind some arbitrary schedule?  It's getting built as we speak - sitting there yapping isn't gonna get it finished any faster.

face a few facts. the coalition is coming to power big time and FTTN will be the network you get. so stop yapping and accept the inevitable. at least THIS NBN might get built before you die.

Doesn't matter to me, the infrastructure is mostly the same.  Putting the brakes on now is only going to further drag out the inevitable.

that doesnt even make sense. FTTN is less than half the cost and doesnt involve the tedious and slow work of connecting each house in the country. FTTN also permits people who actually want or need FTTH to get it - if they pay for it. And therein lies the real problem. You lot all want fibre to your homes but for 'other people' to pay for it.  nothing new there...

So you are saying that the NBN will reduce the time you can get a degree?

Geez Maqqa..you obviously dont have kids in school, ever owned a business or been to uni if you think bringing our communications up to a modern standard is a waste of time.

i run a business that does all its marketing and presence on the web. The NBN gives me no advantage at all. None whatsoever. my website is already fast and 20,000 emails will go the same speed they always did - not that 10 times the speed would make any difference.

And I have had kids at school and some and university and ADSL has managed to download and submit assingments quite fine. Downloanding/streaming lectures manages to work quite well too and that is on WIRELESS at times.

so tell me again what the NBN will do that ADSL cant.

from what i know of your business, which admittedly isn't much, just a few tidbits of information you've put out over the years ...

you said once you paid some guy $21 000 a week to come out and speak at some lectures or some crap like that.. I assume some of that figure includes costs such as travel and accommodation

if you had the NBN you wouldn't need to bring him out . all he needs is a laptop ($1000) with a web cam ($25) on one end with a big TV/monitor on the other end and he can make his presentation in real time from the North Pole or wherever he happens to reside.... You would only need to pay him for the length of the lecture rather than the full day plus expenses ...

Does that present a saving for you?? If you expect any more advice on how to run your business there will be a consultancy fee attached.

If you ask a question like that and expect an answer you really need to give some details on exactly what it is you do ...

What does it matter?

(1) Under the LIBs' proposal we would have got faster broadband by now

(2) The original $4.7B that Labor costed is blowing out to $78B

(3) By the time we get this - it will would 2023

1.  ha!  Yeah right...These things don't build themselves you know.  Anyways, even if you believe libera;ls false promises,  labor is in government so it's irrelevant. Besides, you don't want or need faster internet, remember?

2.  yeah, it's shithouse accounting but what do you expect from pollies?  Still, the differences in price don't negate the quality or necessity of delivering the service.

3.  Yep, well labor shouldn't have made such grand gestures, but it's the same deal as point 2.  Pollies always overpromise and under deliver - does it still surprise you?

But why does it matter to you anyway? you don't want or need faster internet.

Maqqa won’t need to use the internet at all when the Libs get in. He’ll have it disconnected.

He can broadcast the Libs achievements over a loudspeaker system throughout the city.

A) if i wanted to do that I already could. the internet capacity already exists.
B) an NBN would make zero difference to an international speaker who is NOT on the NBN
B) ask yourself why conferences and training courses dont already do that? Could it be that such training is not just some talking head but rather is interactive and involving tutorials, one-on-one etc.
C) face time and social involvement with professionals is half the experience (and value) of such training. faces on a screen simply dont cut it.

another thing you need to understand... the major cost of the training is not travel but rather expertise. that price would not alter. when you employ some of he worlds best they dont come cheap and not travelling would reduce the price some but would also reduce the price we could charge significantly. we charge around $3000 for a weeks training with a real lecturer. would you pay that much for a talking head? Because my expenses would be reduced by probably 15% or less.

oh youve got to look at wayne swans sneaky treatment of the nbn. by setting up nbn co  as a company,  wayne hasnt allowed ANY tax dollars to be set aside to fund it. its all off the budgets books. nbn co is supposed to be self funding, the take up from consumers is SUPPOSED to fund the whole thing, according to"the worlds greatest tresurer" Wink Wink

question.

do you think the worlds greatest tresurer might be telling porky pies and the taxpayer is going to end up covering the cost? Wink Wink

i'd say the odds (based on current very slow rollout, cost blow outs and poor uptake) are looking fairly high Wink Wink

blind freddy could see how much its going to cost to get all those suburban streets ripped up and the army of blokes leaning on shovels , chatting to the neighbours and sipping their pauls ice breakas all day.

i dont mind infrastructure but lets not pretend the taxpayer wont be coughing up for it.

Aqua,

They use existing ducts which hold the copper wire - if possible.

Please use facts not made up nonsense.

I do however think that most of us won't see the NBN for at least 5 years - maybe 10.

teleconferencing is already done. it isnt 'not done' because of bandwidth. it is not done because the difference between a person in the room taking questions, talking with students and socialising cannot be done that way.
