Because it is unique.
Most careers span up to the age of 60/65 - not 30.

I would have thought that was obvious.

its not even remotely unique. they are JUST footballers. what about other sporting bodies or do we only support the ones that are popular? what about boxing? motor sport? what about swimmers? they are too old by 27!

to be a consistent policy it would have to be for ALL careers that have early ends. so you can see it now... kids leaving school choosing careers based on how quick they are over.

you would have to be the last person imaginable who would support this nonsense.

In England people go nuts that Wayne Rooney earns $200,000 per week but they also forget that his worklife is 20-32 at best.

It's quite different from a high earner who then has 30 more years of it.

I think there should be allowances made that they retire 30 years before everyone else.

You are an economic pygmy.  Seriously.

What is stopping a footballer from earning money after they play ?

lack of education, planning, brains or drive. None of whic is my problem or any different to anyone else. A surgeon can have a minor hand or eye injury and his career is over. do we have to include them in the list?

http://au.sports.yahoo.com/news/article/-/16451689/katter-wants-tax-breaks-for-footy-stars/

Quote:
Maverick politician Bob Katter and his Australia Party are campaigning for a Senate seat promising to give tax breaks to highly-paid footballers because of the enjoyment they bring their fans.

The Herald Sun says AFL and NRL stars would be given tax breaks worth thousands of dollars on their rich salaries.

Mr Katter, whose party is tipped to win a Victorian Senate seat, says AFL and NRL players deserve special tax deals to compensate them because their earnings plunge when they retire, often when they are still in their 20s.

"These blokes get paid huge money but their life at the top is very short indeed," he told the Herald Sun.

In the AFL he supports Melbourne because his son-in-law is a one-eyed Demons fan, while in the NRL he backs, not surprisingly, the North Queensland Cowboys.

"There are very few people in Australia who give more joy than our AFL and NRL heroes but they can get injuries in a hurry and their life in the sport comes to an end," he said.

"Most don't have huge opportunities to pursue further work."

Someone explain to me how Katter is expected to win a senate seat if this is the standard of his policies?

Are you sure his name is Katter?

It may very well be Skatter, as in brain, as in Skatterbrain?

Sorry, cannot agree, I'm sure they know this when they start their careers.  Lots of efforts in clubs to facilitate trades and (post sport) career development - these guys want for nothing (except intelligence and humility it could be argued) so IMO this topic is a total wankfest.

Exactly..........in football, where large salaries are received by young persons, enables them to set themselves up for the time they will no longer draw the same level of income.

Very few people, I expect, maintain the same level of income throughout their working lives.........some earn the big bikkies while youth is on their side.......others do not maximise their earning potential until middle age.

Nope......disagree with the tax breaks suggested by Katter....pay tax on what you are earning at the time whether it's at 20 or 50.....

How many people have to reinvent themselves in new careers half way thru their working lives?  A LOT.
footballers are no different and arguably LESS entitled to special treatment given the excessive salraies they earn.

worklife 20 -32 at best?? What a load of bull sh1t  ..... why? if he wants to retire at 32 thats his problem and not anyone else's ... nothing stopping him getting a real job after 32 ... his fame already means he will probably get an advantage and better prospects than others his age and with his lack of experience.

While most people are getting qualifications and experience, these guys are giving their life to sport.  Most don't even make the grade, let alone become superstars who can set themselves up for life on a few years pay.  I'd have to see the detail, but I don't disagree in theory.  But it doesn't matter, it's an idea bound to fail - australians love to hate anyone in the public eye, especially footballers.

not everyone that doesn't dedicate their life to sport dedicates it to their qualifications ... lets face it, most footballers don't have the brains to do anything else worthwhile. They  have a choice in life as does everyone else .. they go into sport knowing full well it is a short career however they do so knowing that if successful the benefits far outweigh the negatives ... lets face it, most of these guys earn at least 3 or 4 times what they would  otherwise earn and in the case of soccer players they can earn 30 to 40 times what they could otherwise expect ... why don't we make the same argument for actors? many spend years waiting tables etc waiting for that big break, and when they get it their careers are often short lived. ...

A crows footballer studied and became a surgeon. that has to be about as difficult as it gets but he did it.

do u really think a footballer is the only one that has to work and study at the same time????

we give tax breaks to people who hoard property so we may as well give it to other useless people who kick a piece of leather around a paddock.

That's how it is in this country full of f.ckwits.

There are alot of people and a hell of alot more reasons to not want to worry about politics, all the way down to how money is spent.

We are the sad FcKs who come here and speak, think, live with politics on our minds. We are the people who need to wake these people up from time to time.

There has been atleast 2 times in my adult life, that I felt like having the easy life. NO STRESS. No dam politics. Just me, me and my wife and peace. Dam, make that a 3rd time.
