A question about Abbott's big new tax.
Mar 30th, 2013 at 6:24am

Here is a question that a viewer posed on Q&A sometime last year. Not sure if it was actually asked on the show.

Quote:
Darryl Toohey from Darlinghurst NSW asked via video: Hi, my question is to Sophie Mirabella. Sophie, your side of politics has made a lot of noise about the carbon tax but the fact is the revenue raised by this tax will be used to compensate most consumers for any price rises. If you win government you’re going to unwind the tax and take away the compensation but then impose your own great big new tax on everything in the form of your exorbitant parental leave scheme. Given that the revenue raised on your tax on big business will be used to benefit just one segment of the electorate, how will you compensate pensioners, students and low to middle income earners for the obvious price rises that will flow from your tax on business?

Given the main stream media has a left wing bias, it's a question that Abbott and his colleagues must have been forced to answer on numerous occasions. Not quite sure why I've missed it, but Perhaps someone here might know the answer.

Found it.

After some waffling Tony gets it back to brass tacks.

Quote:
TONY JONES: Okay but that’s because costs are passed on. So what I’m asking is are the businesses - this is the point of the questioner - are the businesses who pay this tax going  to pass on those costs to consumers?

Quote:
SOPHIE MIRABELLA: Well, I’m assuming businesses will have a cost structure that reflects their costs so if - well, if that modest cost increase is incorporated in their prices, sure, but I think you’re being quite mischievous, Tony, in...

Quite right, Sophie. It wouldn't happen on 2GB or 2UE. The gall of the man.

However, I'm not quite sure you can call a 5% increase in a company's tax bill a modest  cost increase.

What tax can Abbott inflict?

He is not governing!

Not saying much, either which is a pretty sensible path to follow.

Right wingers seem to have a real problem with the electorate being fully informed.

Well it would seem we're not going to be compensated for this big new tax. Has Abbott been asked what impact he expects this tax to have on inflation.

Some of them seem to have a problem with comprehension, as well.

nothing wrong with me, MOTR. It isnt me that is desperately trying to imagine that labor will win an election from 20% down. Its not me pretending that the economy is better now than in 2007 - thats you. Its not me pretending that everyone wants a labor govt. Thats you.

This parallels your climate change belief. you cannot cope with temperatures remaining static so you look for ANY bit of data that suggests otherwise regardless of its accuracy or credibility or relevance.

Critical thinker my ass! you are one of the LEAST critical thinkers on here. A truly critical thinker would be discussing WHY labor is about to be annihilated not trying to pretend that they arent.

That is a good question and I would like the answer to it myself. I cant answer it because I dont know yet, but hopefully a good question like this gets an answer.
