Are forums like this slowly dying?
Apr 14th, 2013 at 8:45am

I mostly use Inet forums for technical issues; the Gentoo forums as a current example are an essential component of an active technical community, and this post doesn't apply to them.

However, from time to time I poke my nose into other, mostly community and special-interest forums like this, just to see what's being discussed, to insert my own opinions and ideas if I'm sufficiently interested, and to engage in a bit of debate that often creates some controversy, annoys others, sometimes annoys me, but usually results in an interesting, perhaps humorous exchange. Lately I've noticed that these venues seem to be far less diverse and popular than previously. Most are now dominated by a clique of regular antagonists whose main occupation seems to be slinging off at each other, and at any visitor whose ideas diverge from the "forum norms". The whole scene is now very reminiscent of what happened first with CB Radio (for those old enough to remember what that was, and maybe still is), then with IRC and the like (Internet Relay Chat for the puzzled), and now with Inet forums.

It would be a pity if all that remained was Facebook and Twitter, though I've no doubt that the owners of those sites, and the many Government and corporate authorities who now use them as public confessionals (urinals?) for their "data mining" and social monitoring activities, would be delighted for them to remain solo and supreme.

The quality of political and social debate throughout the world is in terminal decline. Blatant deception, lies, coverups and self-promotion are now so accepted by the viewing public, the mass media, the "critics" and recognized commentators as to make all of it a sewer of strident, vulgar verbiage. The alternative media has adopted the role of morally righteous castigator, and is equally tedious and repugnant; and the "discussion panels" on TV are so predictable and politically correct as would be an insult to public intelligence were there any such thing.

I therefore ask of the participants here, and of whatever moderators, overseers or owners may read this, whether it is time to review and perhaps re-enliven the format of this and similar forums. I'm about to press the <Delete> key on a list of them. Disappointingly short as it is, the few on it are the only social connections I've made on the Inet. They have thoroughly disabused me of the present social worth of "Internet politics" and "Internet community action", though I was once an optimistic proponent of such things ("GetUp!" in Australia being a typical example of a crude political deception), and with other activities now requiring more of my time, I've decided to abandon them if no prospect of novelty draws be back. A pity, but one amongst many others.

They arent dying slowly they are dying fast since MSN closed. The ones that keep going are the "support" ones for games and software because the companies dont want to actually offer support and in a forum they can ignore you.

"active" is not the same as diverse, nor popular, even less relevant. IRC is still very "active" for those whose taste descends to such depths.

As newcomers join up, there's certainly the opportunity to broaden diversity...I'm finding it's taking some time to gain "acceptance" or "credibility" amongst what appears to be a core group of long time members. Other newbies less persistent than me probably don't stay long.........so opportunity for increasing diversity isn't maximised.

52mid,

This is one of the few internet forums that i have found, where i can speak openly [without my post being deleted].

I enjoy ['enjoy' is the wrong word] being controversial, on my expressed opinion(s).    [....often about ISLAM]

But i always try to provide supporting evidence for the opinion(s) i express in my posts.

Some people here don't like what i have to say [....particularly about ISLAM].

What i have to say, seems to offend the 'sensibilities' of some.

But few of them seem to want to engage me in open debate, on the issue(s) i present.

this is what i once posted on the ABC Q&A online forum....
Quote:

WHAT IS THE CONSEQUENCE OF THIS TYPE OF 'MODERATION' IN A [POLITICAL] FORUM?

One obvious consequence is that ALL DEBATE on a particular issue [on such a forum, within that forum] can be 'guided'.

The debate is 'guided', to the point where only 'acceptable' views, will influence THE DIRECTION OF THE DEBATE.

In other words, what is ostensibly [to an outside observer] an open, online forum, for politial debate, becomes a *pseudo* forum for politial debate.

THE WHOLE POINT OF FREE AND OPEN DEBATE

What the ABC forum MODERATORS are effectively saying is,

"Your point of view is [pick one] untrue/offensive/too contentious. And i won't allow such views to be expressed here."

My argument to the MODERATORS is,
ABC forum MODERATORS may disagree with my opinions, and even say that my opinions are untrue or 'offensive' to some.

But if they feel that, then shouldn't they, or somebody else, be prepared to make that argument, IN THE FORUM, against any points i present?

If i do regard ISLAM as an 'offensive' philosophy, then in a 'free and open' forum, shouldn't i be permitted to express that point of view, and to demonstrate, why i hold that particular view about ISLAM?

And if the detractors [of certain comments i have made] have a legitimate complaint, then let them air it [IN THE FORUM], and have their complaint tested in debate!
.....FOR ALL TO SEE.

Shouldn't the ABC forum MODERATORS allow those people who frequent the ABC forum pages, to decide for themselves if my [or anyone elses] arguments have any merit [or not]?

If what i say is untrue, or ridiculous, that fact, will soon become apparent to everyone, when what i say, is exposed to the light of [widespread] scrutiny.

Open societies do not fear the opinions of fools.
....they rather, EXPOSE and laugh at folly!

In any free and open debate, if a 'position' is absurd, if an 'argument' is absurd,
...then the debater is [often] condemned to all, WITH HIS OWN WORDS.

And isn't the exposure of folly, and error, THE VERY FUNCTION, of free and open debate?

Free and open debate *is meant* to be a contest of ideas!
....where every folly is revealed.

And i would contend, that open debate is healthy, to all general freedoms in a society.

Whereas, lies are easily concealed in closed societies,
....*because* these closed societies are places where lies, and falsehood,
....ARE NEVER EXPOSED TO SCRUTINY, OR SPOKEN TRUTH.

++++++++

CONTINUED FROM LAST POST.....

I would also ask, isn't a very *legitimate* purpose of open debate, to reveal 'error', or to reveal positions held, which are unjust [towards third party's]???

I would contend here, that in any open society, the instruction of TRUTH [what TRUTH reveals to us], is *never* offensive.

Or it should not be held, to be so!

And i would contend that, in any open society, TRUTH the first defence of JUSTICE [in that society].

For the sake of free, and open debate, FREEDOM OF SPEECH must *mean*, the freedom to 'offend' [others who would 'gag' us].

CONSIDER.....

If 'the powers that be' determined to censor and gag debate in society, on the basis that material [information] which may be revealed, was confronting, or distasteful,
....then why do we as a society, feel the need to investigate and debate, issues like CHILD ABUSE and INCESTUAL RAPE???

And using the same logic, of those who claim they are being shamed, humiliated, or 'insulted', by the revelation of confronting or distasteful information,
.....shouldn't we as a society, then suppress the reporting, and debate, of CHILD ABUSE, and INCESTUAL RAPE within society????

I've been on various forums for over 10 years now and they do seem to follow a regular pattern. They start off interesting but inevitably descend into constant abuse and then they just implode before starting somewhere else. This forum has survived a lot longer than most.

My gut feeling is that the younger generation use twitter and Facebook more and don't have the attention span to read long posts or view links so I guess forums like this are more for the older generation.

I think that's true, and it raises the question as to where the younger generations are taking this and other issues. I have neither family nor children, so it's easy for me to be cynical and dismissive of them. Friends with kids tend to agree with me, but still defend them where they can. I sympathize with both in recognizing the declining standards of education and other relevant factors.

I'd say generally that societies worldwide have lost their way; money and material "success"  dominate public ambition, and increasingly private; violence and social alieniation increase weekly; philosophy has almost disappeared between religious fundamentalism on the one hand and "scientific" NeoDarwinism on the other.

Perhaps we should invite a compliant race of aliens to invade the place just to break the present impasse. It feels to me as if everyone is "waiting for God" or the Devil to appear, just to give some certainty to their increasingly bizarre and meaningless existence.

well, you said it, if the existence is meaningless in itself, how can you expect forum to have any meaning?
Facebook and Twitter are only temporary too.

This is the reason I stopped watching Jenny Brockie's 'Insight'.

It's the most sham debating forum I've ever watched. The audience is inevitably loaded to the rafters with the people who are the subject of some kind of criticism ~ with a couple of lonely token souls injected into the audience to represent the critics.

And then Jenny Brockie simply can never help interrupting and diverting attention when some member of the audience is making a credible job of criticising and debunking the PC view of these issues.

My favourites have been when the audience has been stacked with Muslims under siege from some criticism.

It has been a comedy to witness Jenny Brockie choreograph the debating to make sure the Muslims come out lily-white innocent while the nasty rednecks get shown up for being racist/xenophobic/bigoted/evil etc etc.

And the Muslim audience always has professors and doctors and various articulate intellectuals to argue their case, while the 'anti-Muslim' section has nothing but semi-literates off the building sites and road-repair gangs.

It's a hoot.

I might even start watching it again for the comedy.

Jenny who ?           Tongue

These supposed impartial hosts of [supposed] open public forums, who are meant to foster real public debate on important community issues, behave more like political apparatchiks, imo.

i.e.
The 'hosts' often seem to be individuals who are pushing an [already determined, PC] agenda.

Dictionary;
apparatchik = =
1 a member of a communist party apparat.
2 an official in a large political organization.

I sincerely hope that this public forum, OzPol, can flourish and grow.

Not if my hosting bill is anything to go by.

There are a few trends at play here.

1) More people on the internet. Political discussion boards are no longer dominated by a small number of more motivated and interested individuals ("intellectuals"). The "normal people" have invaded. So there has been a corresponding drop in quality of discussion. There are still forums out there that are restrictive and more popular than ever before - just nowhere near as popular as the ones with a broad target audience.

2) Personalisation. This is where facebook comes in, and twitter to a lesser extent (not very familiar with twitter). Facebook deals very effectively with the troll side of things and allows people to feel safer putting private information online, which is probably the main reason why it is so successful. I do have some friends on facebook who use it for pushing a political barrow (and get defriended by some people as a result). If this forum grows in popularity I would like to switch to a similar concept - where instead of me starting boards where everyone can post, you can start your own board and only invite whoever you want. I am basically just waiting for a freeware version of that.

3) Turnover. Things are changing rapidly. Forums and websites will come and go.

I'll give you the interested individuals, BUT it would be a big strecht to also refer to many of those individuals as "intellectuals".
