so it turns out they were chechnyans.

you gotta admit this is pretty out of left field. the article on the Chechnyan ethnic group on wikipedia says there's only about 300 living in the united states, which is shocking given my observation that if there's some obscuro, weird ethnic group out there, there's at least 100,000 or more living in the united states (like the assyrians, whom i thought hadn't existed for two thousand or so years: what's the u.s Hittite population?)

obviously the reason why this happened was because these individuals felt intimidated being such a vanishingly small ethnic minority in the u.s. the solution i think is to dedicate 50% of this year's diversity lottery to Chechnya.
