CNN reports a state government official said there were no credible threats before the race.

Stevenson had just finished the marathon before the explosions. Stevenson said his wife had been sitting in one of the seating sections where an explosion went off, but thankfully she left her seat and was walking to meet up with him.

"We are just so thankful right now," Stevenson said.

How can an observer tell the difference between a bomb sniffing dogs and a drug sniffing dogs? the fact that the dogs (if there really was one) failed to pick up the scent of 3 bombs would lead you to believe the dogs were either there for drug sniffing or crowd control, or maybe the whole story is bullsh1t.

One trained dog may miss them , maybe he has a cold, but the story says several dogs ... I find it hard to believe that several dog trained to detect bombs would miss them.

Bomb sniffing dogs just sniff. Bomb-sniffing dogs have ulterior motives and police handlers.

That's a massive load of bullshit. There are simply to many chemical compound that can act as an explosive to train a dog to know them all. Mostly such dogs are trained for a range of common explosives, which means all you need to fool them is some passing familiarity with training for explosives dogs and enough chemistry know-how to brew your own explosives.

Tell me. Why would someone want to set a bomb off in a crowd of people watching a running race?
Why would someone want to kill women and children out on a day in Boston?

Obviously you understand them to know why.

Not just any race. That was the third race of the day - a charity race to raise money for charities. There were lots of parents with children in that race, including kids in prams. Why bomb a charity race? The intent is to cause as much panic and fright as possible and as much carnage as possible. It's as much a psychological attack as a physical one. The attackers are saying, "we don't care if you're raising money for sick kids (or whatever the race was raising money for), we will attack you as we see fit". Horrible, but that's their mentality.

and who are the attackers and what are their motives?

No doubt, the USA needs to examine what resources the COngo, Litchenstein and Zakastan have of value and invade then so that US corporation can PROFIT from them

For all we know ity could be some nutjob North Korean sympathisers or even some lunatic fringe group. It's no necessarily terrorists - they usually (not always) claim responsibility for their actions. The authorities don't know who is behind it or if they do, they aren't saying yet.
