Well presumably they could have done that anyway if they wanted. This is not about people "standing around" the crime scene - this is no one going to work, the public transport shut down and everyone shut inside their house - 24 hours after the event. If a serial killer was on the loose, barely an eyelid would be batted. 10s of thousands of Americans are killed in gun crime every year - but it never causes the entire city to shut down.

What is the point of me saying this? Like I said, if the terrorist's objective was to cause mass hysteria and disrupt a major metropolis bigger than Sydney - then they succeeded. Imagine the number of would-be terrorists now wringing their hands at what happened here. All they need is to do this in half a dozen or so major cities at once, and it could bring the entire economy down - and cause mass panic across the country.

And thats really my point - the "shut down" during 9/11 was totally justified and understandable because of the sheer scale. It was a monumental project by the terrorists, over a year in the making. But now, apparently, we can get a couple of numbskulls, acting independently, fire off a couple of bombs anyone can make off the internet, and its pandemonium. What if you had say a dozen or so numbskulls, each make a bomb and detonate them around the same time across 6 or so major cities? It may not cause the country to collapse, but I'm sure the mayhem it would cause would be considered by the terrorists a great victory for so little cost. Also the media need to act a bit more responsibly to these incidents - it doesn't require 24 hour rolling coverage to get the message across that 3 people died and many were injured due to some bombs going off. Headlines sure, but not stop the entire news cycle to dedicate it to this one story.
