Has anybody read a Naplan Test?
Apr 29th, 2013 at 3:39pm

We have been helping our grandson prepare for his Year 3 Naplan test.
Now, he is a bright kid (of course), near the top in the top stream of his school although he nearly a year younger than most of the class. And he is coping with the questions and just needed help with technique.

But I have been staggered by the complexity of the material thrown at these kids and, frankly, I can't see how the average 8-9 year old would cope. Unless of course they receive pre-knowledge of the questions and coaching on them.
The standard of language skills on average is just not there.
I can't help thinking that if the same kind of education "experts" who have devised this system are also at work in things like the curriculum and Gonski, then God help the poor little sods.

Know the enemies of a civil society by their public behaviour, by their fraudulent claim to be liberal-progressive, by their propensity to lie and, above all, by their attachment to authoritarianism.

well done to you for venturing into anything to do with todays education system... for me it is a foreign language... no plus or minus anymore...

why I will never know doesnt matter what its called the outcome is the same....why not leave something that worked for years alone and spend the time on getting the  knowledge through to the kids... this is where they fall through the cracks. when you dont understand something you get bored and switch off...I am like yourself bogy have bright healthy grandkids...but lets not kid ourselves they too wont be left behind at some stage..

because some idiot thinks every child is the same.has the same comprehension skills...and every child yearns to learn...

they think putting a fancy name NAPLAN on will make all the bad stuff go away..trouble is a generation pays the price for all this nonsense.thats what makes me mad..

maybe they should put those down at treasury through the course... Grin Grin Grin Grin

People need to understand that the public education system isn't about education its about how much money can be rorted out of the budget to gift to union ensconced bludgers and layabouts so that they can flit effortlessly through life without barely lifting a finger.

You must be joking.

Sample tests here: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/the-tests/the-tests.html

looked.  Far from easy or even likely most Years 3s would answer correctly.

It is composed entirely of the stuff they spend 6 hours a day, 5 days a week doing, so they'd bloody well better be able to cope.

So, it is surgically curriculum driven, and specifically directed at what every Year 3 kid is taught 6 hours a day, five days a week?

They are all experts on koalas?

No, but surely they can read and follow instructions by now...

Quote:
Read Koalas on page 2 of the magazine
and answer questions 1 to 6.

1.  Where do koalas spend a lot of time?
in the trees
in the water
on the ground

Too hard?  C'mon...

They have got 45 minutes to read several 'books' and then answer questions on the content of each book?

Get out of here!

And check this out!

Are you telling me all of that is being taught to all Grade 3 kids for six hours for five days each week?

I'll bet it is not.

Get yer fvcken hand off it.  The magazine (singular) is 8 pages long.  FFS, you reckon you need to be an "expert on koalas" - theres only 7 buggeren sentences of information to absorb!

Give them some credit - They're year 3 students, not SOB.

So, you reckon it was easy peasy?  I don't.  I reckon it would have taken most Year 3 kids the allocated 45 minutes to read and digest the books.

It's not meant to be easy peasy.

It's a test.
For testing.

Quote:
test
/test/
Noun

A procedure intended to establish the quality, performance, or reliability of something, esp. before it is taken into widespread use.

So you see, if every kid got 100% it would be worthless for it's purpose of establishing the quality, performance or reliability of schoolkids.

And at what strength do you rate the 'test?'

I reckon............too bloody hard, especially given that I disagree with you that Year 3 kids are taught that stuff for 6 hours for 5 days each week.

I reckon a good student will ace it in 15 minutes, whereas a very poor student will take the full 45 to fail it.

It does precisely what a test should.  What's the problem?

The problem is have is that I reckon it is too tough for Joe Blow Year 3 kids.  It is probably fantastic to ID  'ace' students, and dumb f.ucks, but it is hardly a fair test for those in between.

I reckon.
