My point was about Herby's bullshit about mixed-race people. I'm not just visably African-American, mixed-race, and my white wife means I'm set to start the Mocha Master Race. As I have made clear, I have a thing for ladies of the Caucasian persuasion, so imagine how hilarious I found this thread by some white guy whining about us darkies stealin' all da white wimmins. This quality of racist assholery is hard to find in the US now, so it's refreshing to see people that unashamedly bigoted.

My point in saying that Chard, was to have people think about how it is that people who might well genetically be 90% AngloSaxon, but have some extra melination in their skin, invariably identify with 'people of colour'.

In some societies, sure. In mine if you look like a duck, quack like a duck, and tend to hang around other ducks we think "must be a duck" and not "it's part goose". Skin tone plays a fairly important part in how we perceive others, how we develop relationships with others, and what social groups we interact with.

Yeah I understand the mechanics of racism pretty well. It was something I didn't understand at all, so I made something of a study of it.

Here's an odd thing for you to consider. As a black American in Australia mostly you'd be treated well, respectfully and regarded as being coool. You'd get the fast track if you chose a career in the entertainment industry and you'd generally be able to eat out on it. Most Australians would be happy for you to shag their daughter, as long as she was old enough.

But if you were a black Australian you'd get the averted eye, at best. It's rare for Australians to have an aboriginal friend. If they go shopping the eye is not averted at all, they are watched by hawks. If they take their kids to the Dr. they'll be told to 'use more soap'; even when they've caught measles from the white kids next door. The last meaningful lobby group for and by aboriginal Australia was the 'Council for Aboriginal Reconcilitation' which became inactive as there was only a limited political commitment to reconciliation from the government of John Howard. The last chairperson, (Pat Dodson, a man with the eloguence that can only come from a struggle to be heard), said on resigning, (1997) "I fear for the spirit of this country".

There is no real dialogue between the Aboriginal people and the government. There is at best a constant patronising attitude that does nothing but demoralise.

And there's money. Government claims to spend a lot of money on Aborigines, which they never see. But it serves those RW interests who blame the victims. Those people who expect a dysfunctional and 'other' culture to become Europeans overnight while still being actively oppressed from the cradle to the grave. Those people who blame Aboriginal drinking and see it as a cause not a symptom. Those people who never listen.

So you see Chard it's not REALLY about skin. It's about shameful histories.

Correct. However, two notable items here. More than one black American navy personnel have been charged with underage statutory rape here in Australia in recent years.

The Australian government offered country aborigines huge discounts on petrol for their cars if they would wash their children properly, and make sure they didn't wag school.

And government nurses were sent out to teach basic hygiene to aboriginal mothers. Basic.

The reality?

Once again, one of Kat's forum pests arrives like a blow-fly to contribute nothing of any value or substance, but just to call attention upon himself.

It was when the administrator of the old D&R stopped banning the pests, that the forum board went into a steep and rapid decline that ensured there would be no new members joining.

I quit forum boards precisely because people like you, Aussie, go flitting around shïtting in every corner like a dog leaving his scent.

I could tell similar anecdotes of institutionalised racism all day.

I'll say this, there's two sides to the story. But it's rare for a two sided dialogue to occur publicly. Fact is many black Australians DO overcome the oppressive prejudice, but those people are amazing. Overtime the % increases as the role models are observed by the youth. But it'll take time, probably it took the AngloSaxons a deal of time to become equalised with the Romans. And all too often the pioneer role models like Pat Dodson, a truly remarkable man and Pat O'Shane, an equally remarkable woman, get swatted back down again. Magistrate Pat O'Shane has shown leniency towards aboriginal kids who've come before her? Well CHRISTT, whodda thunk it. Roll Eyes

So I go to the trouble of telling the whole story because of a belief I have that the truth has a ring to it. And you conveniently forget the measles bit. Or do you think that medicated soap cures measles? There's no cure for measles, the rash isn't itchy and it's a symptom of the viral disease not a seperate bacterial infection. Measles is a notifiable disease blood tests and swabs should've been taken.
