How to change the GST
May 19th, 2013 at 3:39pm

We know the Feds collect the GST for the State government

Does anyone know the process of increasing the GST?

I can't imagine the Feds wanting to change it as the increase would gain them nothing financially or  politically

So anyone saying any Fed government is going to change the GST will need to put a pretty convincing argument forward otherwise they are branded as scare mongering

So the question is - can the State governments organise themselves enough to make the change

If State gov are LIBs proposing and the Feds are Lab then the ALP will have a field day politically

This is not to mention the State governments taking political hits in the polls

So I can't see practically how the GST can be changed without the current governments losing at the next election

they would all have to agree...mmmmmmmmm... so it would be a huge sell that I think is what it would come down too..get more GST and less from the Feds...I think the GST should be upped because then we all contribute..not just income tax payers...which really isnt fair.. well thats as far as things like NDIS are concerned .. its been over 10 years so it isnt unreasonable I wouldnt think... but the way things are distributed needs looking into as well...

as well as the way they spend it..

If all States had to agree then I would say the likelihood of the GST increasing is about as much as Gillard staying PM

For those who remember it seems that Macca and other conservatives spent a good bit of time in 2007 scare mongering. Aparently Labor were planning to increase the GST back then.

Hows this for scare mongering,
Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey says it is up to the states and territories to make a case for changes to the goods and services tax (GST), after NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell called for an overhaul.

Mr O'Farrell says the GST formula is broken and he wants to see it reconsidered in the Coalition's proposed tax review.

Any change to the GST has to be agreed to by all the States and both houses of Federal parliament.

The States get all the money so they will agree to it.

The Federal Government won't have to give the states as much for health and infrastructure so they will also benefit.

As for the political damage... Well all the Coalition have to do is throw up there hands and say "budget emergency" "massive debt" (even though it is amongst the smallest debts in the developed world) and I'm sure their mates at the Murdoch press will come to the party and support it.

So yes, an increase to the GST is not only possible but quite probable when the Coalition win the election.

and what would the Feds use?

I agree with GenX.. But allow the states to collect their own GST.. Collection of Tax by the feds was only supposed to be a temp solution during The Great war (WW1) to fund our military. But if Tax collection was returned to the states we would see a better and more democratic type of federal politician. After all they would have to negotiate with the states to get funding and would protect us from wasteful federal Governments like we currently have.
