I never bothered in the recent UK elections cods because I can't stand the Labour Party, Cameron has let me down on various fronts and I think the LibDems are cracked.

In a normal society, if a politician or party does not match up to the standard you expect, then you should be free to not vote for them.

I did register my view by being one of the 60% who didn't turn up.

They have to win my vote.
Compulsory voting makes people vote who wouldn't care less which is absurd.

Which is probably why nobody else does it.

so the country is left tpo the mercy of 40% that do turn up mostly unionists I am sure.. well done andrei.. sorry but that pathetic its all about you isnt it?..

seems childish havent you got 2 little girls you want to see things improve for???  or are you prepared for them to live in a world of fanatics....because they will always vote come hell or high water.

There is only one poll to take notice of and that is held on the 14th September where everyone gets a say not just 1000 people that live in liberal areas

They said a week is a long time in politics and there is about 120 days to go before the election and a lot can happen between now and then.

If you read the article you would see that it was NDP that lost the election and they are like our labor party so the conservative-leaning people did turn up to vote

So they are a bunch of criminals too!

People will turn up in droves to vote the rotten Gillard government out.

If I were you i wouldn't want anyone to know where I lived either.

longweekend58

I am opposed to compulsory voting but the stats knock my argument out of the park.

Practically we only have compulsory polling booth attendance but given that in most elections about 1% fail to show up and only about 1% fail to vote correctly.

Polling is a statistical sampling which can show trends and anomalies, the trend for the ALP has been down then flat-line.

Doing polling on a variable target quantity is very dodgy.

Given the vast majority in Australia seem happy to vote and know how to correctly ...... this does provide a far more stable polling basis.

it is always a complexity in predictive polling when voting is voluntary. absensces in voting are n ot across the board but rather centred on ethic and age groups who do vote differently than the average thus skewing the results. If 50yos and up didn't go to the polls, labor would win the election. if <50s didn't vote, labor would almost fail to win a seat.

It was an example, not a commentary on this election.

If you read the whole of the article you will find that their pollsters are often wrong indicating that have statistical flaws in their methodology. However in Australia, news poll and galaxy have a record of never being more than 1.1% out in their predictions. and with the current margin being 12-16% that is of no consequence.

That can't be right. Last night Galaxy was 54-46 and Newspoll was 56-44. That's 2% different from each other.

and the middle ground of 55/45 means they are 1% off.

TheGreenLight

I know on election night the two party preferred means everything, but in the polling the primary means more in trends.

The ALP have been hovering around 30% and the Coalition have been hovering around 46-48% so 12-16% is right on the mark.
(depends which poll your talking about)

FYI preferences are not a guaranteed in fact they are modelled in these non-election polls, preferences can add or subtract a 1-2%  .... not everyone follows them blindly.

The only anomaly in the real polls is the greens polling in real state elections versus their national figure.

It appears the greens are going to dip back below 10% if the state elections get mirrored federally.

It got bugger all to you two one who I vote for but the liberal/national party will be last on the ballot paper.

But don't worry the national party will win this seat. They won last time 61.17% to 31.83%.
