Not a lot of hope...
Jun 7th, 2013 at 8:04pm

Watching the never-ending disaster that is the Gillard Government one is drawn back to the dying year of the Whitlam government where everything it touched turned to disaster and nothing they did made a positive difference. Scandal upon scandal and disastrous news every week made this government a byword for incompetence. This failed government was slaughtered by a record majority in 1975 as punishment for 3 years of chronic mismanagement.

1977 saw labor slaughtered yet again gaining only a handful of seats back from the Fraser Government. No one ever expected to see such a massacre in australian politics again. Even John Howard's massive thumping of Keating in 1996 was nowhere near the flogging Whitlam received. But then came the 2011 NSW state election.

This election defeat was not a harsh one or even a flogging. It was far worse than that. Only harkening back to the dim days of the 1975 election can we find a parallel. NSW Labor was 'whitlamised'. Amazingly, they suffered an even worse defeat than did big Gough. But worse was to come. QLD sent the ALP to 7 seats in a Tarago in a history worst-ever result for labor.

And now we see the never-ending incompetent saga of Gillard and her cronies. While Rudd was a poor performer by any definition, Gillard has way outstripped him for the title of the 21st century Whitlam. If only she had Whitlam's oratory powers! That would at least be something to be salvaged from this dreadful PM.

The carbon tax has sent Labor's already parlous primary vote plummetting. The wrong side of 30% is now a real possibility - a level well below that which Whitlam received.

'Whitlamised' is a new term. 'New', because no political analyst expected to ever have another electoral drubbing on a par with the 1975 election. But NSW and QLD Labor gave the word life and now Gillard is giving continuation to it. On current levels Gillard is facing a savage thrashing at a general election. But the future holds even more bad news.

The Carbon Tax is eroding support in labor heartland while galvanising conservative voters who might otherwise be shifted. The Greens - who gave Gillard the preferences she needed last election - are themselves seeing a backlash and consequently their vote is dropping like a stone. Support from the union movement is drying up and the voting public is not at all convinced.

All this looks like a perfect storm for 21st century Labor. State governments falling like dominoes, federal labor self-destructing and no sign of anyone coming to the fore to stop the factions from ripping apart australias oldest political party. And the NBN wont save Labor.

Massive cost overruns and delays before the project even gets started is not a good sign for the future. As the NBN goes along it could become a running sore for the ailing Gillard govt as it spends $50-60B on a project few in the heartland city electorates see any need for. Rather than becoming a monument to their foresight and vision it could just as easily stand as a glaring example of their profligate spending and general inability to govern responsibly.

In 2013 she will end up being 'whitlamised' and ironically lead labor into the electoral wilderness that Whitlam lead 1972 labor out of.

Being 'whitlamised' sounds a lot like being 'euthanised'. I the case of  the Gillard government, the parallel is even closer.

So, all voters are complaining about the Gillard Government?

Really?

Where are you getting that information from?

Undecided

Hmmm... let's pretend that the answer was metaphorical rather than mathematical. Or at least let's assume that that is what most people with half a brain would have worked out. But for you I will restate it...

12million (15million minus the 30% of voters that still support her) are complaining about her.

now are you happy or feeling a little silly? Trust me, the latter is what you should be feeling.

Feeling silly?

For knowing that not all voters are complaining about the Gillard Government?  No, not at all.  Quite the contrary.

Feeling silly?

For knowing that 15 million minus the 30% of voters that still support her is actually 10.5 million and not 12 million?  No, not at all.  Quite the contrary.

An airplane was about to crash; there were 5 passengers on board, but only 4 parachutes.

The first passenger said, "I am President Obama, the chosen one. The world needs me, I can't afford to die." So he took the first parachute and left the plane.

The second passenger, Julia Gillard, said, "I am the prime Minister of Australia and I am the smartest woman in Australian history, so Australia's people don't want me to die." She took the second parachute and jumped out of the plane.

The third passenger, John Kerry, said, "I'm a Senator, and a decorated war hero from the Army of the United States of America ." So he grabbed the parachute next to him and jumped.

The fourth passenger, ex-President George W. Bush, said to the fifth passenger, a 10-year-old schoolgirl, "I have lived a full life, and served my country the best I could. I will sacrifice my life and let you have the last parachute."

The little girl said, "That's okay, Mr. President. There's a parachute left for you. Australia 's smartest woman took my schoolbag."
