Gardening weekend
Jun 30th, 2013 at 4:08pm

had a very good weekend in the garden.
Just felt like it on friday at work.

Planted 6 grevilleas, 4 punnets of veges and herbs.

Now it's gently raining

I spent a few hours yesterday and today in mine.

Pulled the expired plants from last summer, moved some shrubs, pruned my
'bottle-brush' bushes, and transplanted a 6' palm-tree into my front garden.

Planted my thornless black-berry, and re-potted my raspberries and a few indoor
plants, and erected a small trellis.

The tulip and gladdy bulbs go in tomorrow.

It takes me 4 days from start to finish to trim all my hedges, about 3 to 4 hrs each day. Given that I live on the Gold Coast where the dam things grow like they on steroids over the summer months.

It certainly doesn't feel bloody good for the soul

I don't know the name of the one that's the most problematic for me (I have 4 types) , but new leaves are initially gold, and they become green later .... I've heard many nurseries up here refuse to sell it anymore because they classify it as a weed. Grows like the clappers as soon as there is a bit of sunlight. I have to trim it 2 or 3 times for every time I do the other varieties.

Tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, some onions.

Plus blackberries and raspberries.

Midwinter here, so not much planted yet (frosts) but ground is ready.

Not much chance to do much this year, what with the arthritis then the hip operation.

But garlic, onions, spring onions, carrots in old tomato patch (still need to pull nettles etc from around seedless blackberries) this years tomato patch dug and peas, garlic and mustard planted, one patch with brassicas and chard. In the front, a few asian veges and quite a bit of broadbeans.

Need to clean up strawberry patch—once this damn cold is gone. tomato seeds in milk cartons as described in separate thread. (didn’t see this one.)

The garden comes to the rescue, again.

My wife has been mourning the loss of her cat.
For a VERY committed pet owner, it's a terrible thing to lose a pet.

In the weekend we bought some flower seedlings for her to plant.
I left her well alone to her planting, bringing her bits and pieces as she needed.
Saw a smile on her face and her body relax.
The next day, her sorrow had eased.

This is what gardening is mostly about—harvesting a glorious glut and preserving it for later. Bought 2Kg seville oranges Sunday, yesterday made 8 big jars marmalade. Looks good with a great color, and I think it has set OK:

...

In case you think I used trick photography  Grin look and see how the thin shreds of peel are distributed pretty evenly from top to bottom.

Had some from that half–jar on toast just now—delicious! Let the juice-peel-lemon juice stand for 36 hours, added 2tsp pectin and a knob of ginger finely shredded and cut the sugar by 800g from the amount in the recipe—as you see, the set is fine.

Going to buy a kilo of ginger at the Market tomorrow and make preserved ginger (tried to grow ginger last summer, none came up  Embarrassed but will plant some Sep and see how it goes. Grew it before so know it can be done in Adelaide. Then used the preserved ginger to make a batch ginger marmalade. Will also make a batch with fresh ginger, 200g, finely shredded.
