its not as if any of the wankers that like that sort of show are going to listen to a word sophie says Wink

Righties love to call Q&A "leftard". They never produce a skerrick of evidence, but that makes no difference.

It's just one of those things they believe, it makes them feel better, the poor old dears.

Every panel member last night except for Sophie was either a Labor or Green supporter. Has the panel ever been stacked with 4 Liberals and 1 Labor/Green?

Ever heard of the Cato Institute, an ultra right think tank? Sue Cato was on the panel.

And I doubt an advertising CEO is a socialist, he certainly didn't sound like one. So rather then 4-1, it was 3-2 to the Libs.

Don't be dishonest. Did you even listen to them speak? Sampson and Cato started to hiss and spit every time Sophie spoke. Sampson even went as far as to say that he wanted the subject of asylum seekers banned from the election because he didn't like the direction it was heading.

She kept lying

the reason asylum seekers shouldn't be an election thing is because its a minor issue compared to other more important issues that should be brought up @ an election.

SOB

Border sovereignty isn't a minor issue, nor is spending billions of dollars on uninvited people.

Who kept lying?

Sophie was lying - thats why the others kept calling her out on it.

The issue isnt "border sovereignty" its asylum seekers which we agreed to accept into australia and their mode of travel. There are relatively few of them and they dont effect many ppl @ all. Some issues effect us all though and should be addressed - eg education and disability and NBN etc . . .

I don't think you're aware of how the average person feels about this issue. It's a major vote loser. It might not effect you at all, but people feel strongly when the integrity of our borders have been put in to question. The borders of a country are similar to the borders of your house; you don't allow anyone to waltz in, you invite them and/or they ask for permission first.

What the UN conventions or some lawyers say on this is irrelevant. People will always place their security above that of perceived outsiders.

What a horrible piece of work she is.

SOPHIE Mirabella can lay claim to a new, but likely unwelcome gift, bestowed yesterday by outgoing federal independent MP Tony Windsor.

Mr Windsor gave the member for Indi “the nasty prize” via an appearance yesterday morning on the ABC TV program Insiders with fellow independent Rob Oakeshott.

His remarks quickly stirred up a frenzy on social media.

Mr Windsor — who announced his resignation from politics just hours before the leadership battle between Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd reached its climax on Wednesday evening — declared Mrs Mirabella would be the person he would least miss in the Parliament.

He then threw his support behind Indi’s independent candidate, Cathy McGowan.

“She (Mrs Mirabella) wins the nasty prize. The people of Indi, just have a look at your representative and see how much better you could do,” he said.

Mr Windsor even offered his help to Ms McGowan’s election campaign, “now that I’ve got some time on my hands”.

Ms McGowan said she was thrilled “someone of national prominence has seen what’s happening in Indi”, but hoped any tit-for-tat remarks wouldn’t distract from the focus of the campaign.

“I’m part of a community movement (Voices for Indi) that has seen what’s been going in politics the past few years, and really wants it to be different,” she said.

“What we’re trying to do is build up respect for representatives and make our issues heard in Canberra.”

Other candidates for the seat of Indi were quick to voice their approval of Mr Windsor’s remarks, despite him clearly throwing his support behind Ms McGowan and not themselves.

Labor candidate Robyn Walsh said Mr Windsor’s judgement was based on “his observations of her performance” after working alongside Mrs Mirabella for many years.

“The whole idea of representative democracy is that you look at the people standing to represent your electorate, and judge which of them is the best for the job,” she said.

“Unfortunately, there are few people in Indi who have tried to work with Ms Mirabella in the past who would disagree with his opinion of her.”

Greens candidate Jenny O’Connor said: “Sophie Mirabella is such a deeply unpopular political figure, it is time for the people of Indi to use their vote to change their representation.

“Even though there are differences in our approach, we (Greens and independents) are all strongly united in wanting to change our representation from Sophie Mirabella to someone who is truly representative of the people of Indi,” she said

Of course im aware of how the "average person" is told what to think by the media. That is why this relatively minor issue has been blown out of all proportion. Its a dog whistle.

Boat arrivals haven't been reported in the mainstream media for months.
Anyway, your refusal to take this issue seriously is one of the major reasons Labor is looking at defeat. Gillard refused to take any strong action on it and now look where she is.

There is a great misconception among Australians ( ... particularly those from Sydney's western suburbs) that every person of middle eastern or Sri Lankan appearance they see in their neighbourhood and streets has arrived in the country via an unauthorised fishing boat

The TRUTH is, for every 100 of "these people" they point the figure at - around 1 or 2 of them are "boat people"
The other 98 or 99 have come to Australia on regular immigration and refugee programs

So even if Tony Abbott's "Stop the Boats" slogan had any effect ( ... which the experts agree WON'T), the result wouldn't even be noticed

People drowning is the issue.

What a "progressive" thinks about this and what the average Australian thinks are worlds apart. A "progressive" probably wouldn't care if 50 million rocked up. But the average Australian does. Whether or not you think they are immoral changes nothing.

Again, your grammar is very poor. You sound like a 13 year old attempting to act "cool" with his friends: It's like ... you know ... just so ... wrong, man! These people ... man ... should do want they want ... man ... and not worry about what people think; like, you know?
