Greens push for 90pc renewable target

Date
    July 1, 2013
The Age.

The Greens will push for a 90 per cent renewable energy target by 2030, party leader Christine Milne has announced.     Smiley

Senator Milne said on Monday that the target was achievable and she hoped that one day 100 per cent of energy would be from renewable sources.

She said critics had said a 20 per cent target by 2020 was too ambitious, but once a plan and technology development was in place business got behind it.

"Not only do I think it is achievable, I actually think by setting a road map, by setting an ambitious target, you are more likely to get there faster," she told reporters in Melbourne.      Smiley

"But let's actually set the target."

Senator Milne said a move to be considered by the Labor cabinet to make an earlier move to an emissions trading scheme was a "populist pitch to the Australian Industry Group, to the big polluters".

"What (Kevin Rudd) wants to do is make it cheaper for the big polluters to pollute," she said.      Sad

"Why would you want to tinker with something that is working?"

Senator Milne also paid tribute to retiring Climate Change Minister Greg Combet, saying he had a genuine commitment to negotiating carbon pricing.      Smiley

She said that while they totally disagreed on the issue of the generosity of compensation to the coal-fired generators, Mr Combet worked extremely hard with the Greens in negotiating the clean energy legislation.

"He was very professional in the way that we managed that; he is committed to this, and I think it is worth listening to him when he says there is a great deal of complexity in bringing forward carbon pricing," she said.

"I particularly wanted to pay tribute to his work and to the genuine commitment he brought to negotiating carbon pricing."

Senator Milne also praised retiring Labor veteran Simon Crean, saying a lot of what he did had the new economy at heart.

Well it is 90% of 2%, so it will make a difference to the overall global production of CO2, now won't it?  Grin

Friggen greens, the 'Dad Joke' of Australian politics.

As long as renewable energy technology such as solar and wind power is as expensive as it is now, a target of 90% is just a fairy tale.

But it's night only 50% of the time so shouldn't it be 50%

Or is the 10% to count for the CO2 emitting carbon based life forms that inhabit the planet? Huh

What is the best way of making something cheaper and more efficiently?

Solar power can be used 24/7.

An interesting answer, given that there is very little proof that capitalism is the most efficient ideology, but you aren't one for proof are you?

Anyways, to clear up your confusion, the best way is to make a lot of them. You get valuable practise on the practical applications of how to actually build the things. You get practise on the supply side. Each one you build makes the next one that little bit cheaper / better / faster.

What doesnt magically generate faster building times, or cheaper supply routes, or highly trained staff, is not doing things and whinging and moaning about the price. That does bugger all actually.

Labor tried that with solar and look what happened? Sent a lot of operators broke and a lot of people lost their jobs.

The proof is all around you Donny unless you deny Darwin's theory of evolution?

Mother Nature is a capitalist.

Life is infinitely close to perfect capitalism.

Survival of the fittest, enterprise and adaptation to survive and prosper and all that stuff is just capitalism in action.  Smiley

Look, I know you dont think too highly of the ALP, but could you at least try to fill me in on whatever latest nonevent you are blustering over.

Im pretty sure its wasnt ALP governments that were cutting funding to renewables, though please, by all means prove me wrong.
