HMAS taxi picks up 101 fares

Australian Maritime Safety Authority - AMSA

AMSA coordinated the response to a vessel requesting assistance approximately 42 nautical miles south of Java with support from Defence, Customs and merchant vessels. AMSA received a request for assistance at approximately 5.15am today. A broadcast to shipping was issued by AMSA this morning and two merchant vessels responded. Aircraft tasked by AMSA located the vessel at approximately 3pm. The merchant vessels arrived on scene at approximately 5pm. HMAS Larrakia was also tasked to respond and arrived on scene at around 5pm. A total of 101 people were safely transferred onto HMAS Larrakia and are now en route to Christmas Island.

What a f#cken farce.

They may as well dock in Java and pick them up. It will give navy personnel work experience for a career in the merchant marine.

I notice Rudd has delivered a swag of money to them - and that's just the bit we know about. I fully expect the boats to slow for a while.

There goes Rudd's mission of trying to find a regional solution. We send boats up to pick up these so-called refugees and asylum shoppers. Any of our 'partners' in the region would say what's the point if Australia is going to establish a water taxi service.

Rudd is sinking in the mire of a problem he himself made.

The Howard Government policy of turning back the boats was fine. Two boats in a year.

Now Rudd's only choice is to start pumping billions of dollars into Indonesia so that they might just stop a few boats.

This is situation hopeless, out of control call it what you like but anyway you look at it, its ratshit.

The leaky boat only went 42 miles?

A 12 foot dingy with an outboard motor would have been safer.

The truth needs to be repeated over & over John, until even the dumbest of those on your side (of which you are not one, I will say) have it imbedded in their frontal lobe.

you should see the condition of these fishing boats, they are only ever intended to be built to  carry a crew of less than a doze to start with. The smugglers choose the worst and cheapest available, of course they know the boat is at the least going to be confiscated when it reaches its destination. One trip disposable boats.

Heard this AM that in Rudds first 6 days of being returned PM has seen more boats in those 6 days than in the last 6 years of Howards governance.

The boat ppl that Rudd seems more intent on proving that he can't/wont stop, is the boat he will go down on come election night.
