Under Labor more than 1000 have died compared to 200

So it's clear that Labor wants them killed off

How many died in Indonesia because there were no boats available? Didn't they die because of coalition policy too? or you don't count the ones that aren't published in the local papers? Or perhaps you don't care once they cross an imaginary line?

maritme laws as well as common decency dictate that when a boat is in distress, the nearest ship will go to it's aid, regardless of whose waters it is in.

The rest of the maritime law states that the boat will be taken to the nearest port.

So we are now looking at the "no boats available" situation ie when they are in Indonesia???  Grin Grin Grin Grin

No, inform the Indonesians that a boat in their jurisdiction has sent a distress signal of course.
It's up to them.
We shouldn't have to go hunting all over the world for these country shoppers.

What's your point.
People die every minute of every day.
Who cares how many died in Indonesia because they couldn't get a smugglers boat.
Perhaps a plane flight might have been quicker eh.

So the Indonesians are never to rescue the boats launched from their shores?
They have outsourced it all to us?

The Indonesians have far more defence assets than we do.
What they lack is the political will to fix the issue, despite the rhetoric from Bang Bang and KRudd.
Would they really have us believe they had no defence assets whatsoever on the southern part of Java.

Quite a few people WOULD ...

( ... though they've learnt to mask that sentiment - very well)

The Australian government should allow asylum seekers to fly into Australia at one tenth of the cost of coming on people smugglers' boats, says billionaire Clive Palmer.

MR Palmer says the federal government's position on not issuing visas to asylum seekers fleeing Indonesia fuelled the people smuggling trade.

Mr Palmer said Australians collectively bore the responsibility of asylum seekers drowning at sea.

"We can eliminate the people smugglers. We can eliminate the problem. We can eliminate the drownings. We can treat people as human beings."

Mr Palmer said he did not approve of the offshore processing supported by both major parties.

"What sort of a nation are we if we don't follow our international responsibilities and allow people to come here safely?"
he said.

The world shares a collective guilt and shame because we turned away Jewish refugees fleeing from Hitlers Holocaust...

'Ship of Shame' ~ but what you say is not entirely true.

At the time this ship was putting into various ports to find safe sanction for its Jewish passengers, none of those countries would have dreamed it possible that Herman Goering was soon to order the extermination of the Jews as the Final Solution.

(It wasn't Hitler, Himmler, or Eichmann who came up with the idea of extermination).

***

A later great shame was how, just after the war, Jews were very badly treated on a refugee ship bringing them to Australia.

I can't remember the nationality of the ship's crew, but apparently they treated the Jews every bit as badly as did Hitler's thugs.

At every opportunity, man's inhumanity to man never ceases to amaze and astonish.
