How to stop the boats
Jul 17th, 2013 at 2:05pm

There is only one course of action available unless we are to have mass, unplanned, unsupervised immigration.
This advice applies equally to Abbott & Rudd.

1. Station as many navy vessels as possible across our north western approaches, each equipped with interpreters.
2. Every vessel needs to be equipped with a multi-lingual loud-hail message announcing the following to any boat intercepted:
- you will not be allowed to proceed into Australian waters
- we will supply you with fuel and provisions if you turn back or agree to a tow
- if you disable or scuttle your vessel you will be on your own, we will offer no assistance beyond towing back towards Indonesian waters
3. The navy's orders should be to adhere strictly to these rules.

Nothing else will work. The international community can jump up & down as much as it likes. What can it do? We have the right to protect our borders.

We have such a tiny fraction of the worlds refugee's turning up at our door, that I think we can all happily agree "we have stopped the boats", at least as much as possible.

If we have 300,000 per year like other countries, and then dropped it to 20,000 we'd be hailing our success as fantastic.

Lets stop spending any more money on this than we have to.

Sure, but no major party would do such a thing.

If you scuttle your boat you'll be on your own? If the Navy let that happen, it would be all over the international media within 24 hours.

The Navy are far more risk-adverse than that.

The navy is there to carry out the orders of the govt and, as I said, stuff the international community and the media.
Have we no spines? Did we get them from Kmart?

I love this policy. At the same time, let's just ask America to nuke indonesia and then we'll be rid of all these pesky refugees.  Why waste money on having boats stationed on our northern borders when we can eradicate the problem with one quick push of a button?

What do you think would happen to any Australian vessel in distress if we did this?

What if our government offered a large reward to anyone in Indonesia who
knew about an intended boat trip to supply that information?

We could then use that to inform Indonesian authorities &
even send reporters there to get it all on TV.

The Indonesian embarrassment would STOP THE BOATS.

How about we adopt Gillards policy of flying boat arrivals directly back a UNHCR camp & taking some from there instead.
Amanda Vanstone advocates it.

Pretty sure after word gets back to Indo this is whats happening the boats will stop. No point if your ending up back at camp.

Pity Tony puts himself before human life and solving a problem he thinks is so important.

That would probably work ... but they aren't interested in stopping them, only in the political mileage they can get out of them.

Under a Fuhrer, that's true.

In a demokracy, alas - the navy is bound by protocols and procedures - of which Search and Rescue is one.

One of the unspoken rules of civilized countries is that they don't stand by and watch people drown at sea.

I know - spineless.

Ah - if the camp's in another country, they'd need a visa, no?

This is what Labor mean when they refer to that old chestnut, a "regional solution".
