I opted for the $85 a month Optus broadband plan - 120gig a month and free home phone.

I use a lot of bandwidth due to video content and I figured I'd save $35 a month on landline rental for the home phone. That's been in place for some time and I've never exceeded my 120gig allowance - the phone costs nothing.

I recently upgraded my mobile from an old Nokia to a pre-paid Alcatel X-Pop (which I'm still learning how to operate*).  So I went with Dodo for $19.90 a month @ $350 credit on the mobile.

I got tired of paying $20 a month for a limited mobile I rarely used, a landline is good for my everyday needs and I haven't had to pay a premium for internet.

*My smart 'phone is smarter than I am! How is it that I get an 185 page A4 booklet with a TV and I get an instruction manual as big as a box of matches for a 'phone with a dual-core processor?

I'll just continue to pay the piper - at this stage, I see no necessity to shorten my already limited lifespan by fretting about the details.

Tomorrow, maybe, I'll devote some of my limited time on this Earth to worrying about the cost of communication.

In the interim ............. DILIGAF   Cool

I'm on a Telstra capped and it's great

$150 per month gets me unlimited ADSL and all calls to mobiles and landlines in Australia. I even gets some international calls (up to $100). Given that I work from home and have o'seas clients it's great for me. I save a fortune.

I did have to argue with them at the time. They wanted to put me on a business plan but I told them it is first and foremost a home, & I want a home plan. They reluctantly agreed. I'm not sure it's available anymore.

Yeah telstra likes to try to put you on a business plan.

That looks like a good deal john. I am with iinet and have the voip service. Its pretty good but not as good as your deal. I can call uk or america or netherlands for about 3c a minute but calls to mobiles are about 80c a min.

I just changed my mobile plan this morning from vodaphone to iinet because its exactly the same plan for $5 less per month and 8c per min less.

One thing I just learned - you cannot get ADSL without a landline. That is why they are always bundled. You need an active landline to support the ADSL.

I think 'naked' broadband refers to broadband without the landline.

Nope. Naked DSL is broadband without the phone. You still have the line but no phone - have to use voip with naked DSL hence no phone connection fees every month.

I'm with a mob called Eftel.
ADSL2+ Unlimited for $74.99 per month and $32.95 for the home phone.

Speed is over 1.5mbs
All up, about $108.00 per month (plus calls, not that I make many).

Can't get Optus or iinet where I am, and don't like Telstra. I've had problems with them in the past (even though I worked for a Telstra Partner as a phone billing consultant)

Cable is the same cable used for pay tv eg foxtel, if you have access to cable TV then use that cable for internet connection which would have to be more modern than a phone line.
A friend has cable internet connection through pay tv cable,a bit faster than my ADSL 2 and no need for a landline.

I like to have a landline with  answering machine.

Just remember that when using Skype with your naked DSL, everything you say is recorded and stored in PRISM databases.

Also note that you will be paying arbitrarily high rates for any service because there is no competition in Australia. Democratic Capitalism in Australia is a 'front' to the rest of the world so that our financial elites can legally conspire with international elites.

In truth almost every major industry in Australia is a monopoly, with prices artificially set to maximise profits.

Australia is quite corrupt, although many woodland creatures would dispute this on legal definition of course!
