I was quite happy when I heard the announcement from KRudd and Labor on Friday that all smugglers boat passengers arriving in our waters will be sent to PNG for processing, and all those found to be refugees would be resettled there.
I even made a rum & coke and raised a toast to KRudd and Labor for finally coming up with a decent policy after all these years, although I did have reservations about the implementation side of things due to KRudd's record.
Today I'm saddened as it's only taken three days for a wheel to fall off the KRuddmobile as more detail comes to light.
PNG detention facilities will only accept adult males, no women, no children.
Women and their husbands, and children will still be processed in Australia.
Those single and unaccompanied males that eventually are resettled in PNG will be granted citizenship under PNG laws.
That being that the refugee is only eligible for citizenship after living in PNG for eight years, and if they can demonstrate a linguistic capability in one of PNG's native languages.
I can see that this policy will now entice more women and children aboard the smugglers boats with single men claiming to be the husband.
And give further enticement to country shoppers to  chuck their passports over the side.
This is fast turning into another Labor policy dogs breakfast.

Is this the same Paul Sheehan of 'Among the Barbarians'? (1998 ~ Condemned as highly 'racist' and 'inflammatory' at the time it hit the book stores).

Glasshouses, Paul...

And then Sheehan commits the unforgivable sin of any journalist, which is to knowingly tell a porky because it suits his purpose of drumming up public hysteria.

To wit:

Quote: Quote:
The policy of turning back the boats is humane compared with this policy. Not surprisingly, there was a riot at the detention centre on Nauru on Friday night, leaving the centre destroyed by its inmates and a bill estimated at $60 million - to be footed by you.

Naughty naughty. This happened the day before Rudd made the announcement - and you can bet a falafel to a Gypsy's dog he knew that even as he was typing his little piggy-porky.

I'm happy to debate its relevance.  What's your point?

[And Herbert, you are 100% correct about that timing.]

well both Rudd and PNG are not saying HOW MANY and if it is a little as 600 then it is just the Malaysian solution all over again but with even lower numbers.  that leaves 16,000 unaccounted for every year. Plus it is only for single males thereby rendering the solution impotent right from the beginning.

After a great wave of hope, the PNG Solution is turning into the Rdd-crapfest that happens to everything he touches.

Another fine example of Labor's policy on the run.
I thought he might have gotten this one policy right at least considering he was the idiot that put the people smugglers back in business in 2007, and he has something to prove to the electorate.

17000 arrived last year. and the rate shows no sign of slowing.  The PNG non-solution may slow it for a while until the smugglers realise that it isn't really going to make much difference at all.
