Rudd's decision will stop the boats, Afghan asylum seekers declare

KEVIN Rudd's Papua New Guinea solution has bit savagely in west Java, where Afghan asylum seekers have immediately begun telling people smugglers they are cancelling their planned boat trips to Christmas Island.

After the Prime Minister's announcement, it did not take long for the news to circulate in the mountain-top resort city of Cisarua, where an estimated 5000 asylum seekers were awaiting to make boat trips.

By Saturday morning, groups of Afghan men, who are highly visible on the streets, were saying they would never accept settlement in Papua New Guinea and began instructing intermediaries working for the smugglers that they would not be going...

...Afghans - who travel cheaper by boat than people of other nationalities, usually paying around $3000 - told News Corp Australia that they would now register with the UNHCR and wait for legal resettlement because the idea of PNG seemed too shocking to them...

...Noor arrived back in Indonesia last month, ready to try again - and hoping he could bring his family after him.

He was awaiting word of a time to be put on a boat when Mr Rudd's announcement changed his world.

How is it reporters can find these people and the local authorities cannot???

Kevin Rudd's policy might just work and be the framework for other destination countries to deal with asylum seekers who take to great a risk to attain freedom!!!

The Premier demanded Mr Rudd spend more on beefing up border protection measures in the Torres Strait.

That would be a great outcome Adel, if they know they will get their turn in three or four years, they would be quite willing to wait....light at the end of the tunnel. It's the hopelessness that drives them to take the risk of climbing aboard dodgy boats.

Its unimaginable what would have happened to these people if Abbott and Morrison implemented their policies along with the hate campaign they are so fond of hanging on refugees.
Kevins policy is a bitter pill to swallow but its way better than a hate filled Abbott govt going to town on refugees and then starting on the rest of the countries minority groups.
Lets hope that this releases some of the pressure that was building and ends the hate and fear that the Libs created and then fed off.

Is Campbell Newman working as a marketer for people smugglers?

Why would you want to advertise this to people smugglers and their clientele?

What I would like to see is the Federal and Queensland Government urgently do something about the TB epidemic in PNG. If PNG is as close to Australia as Campbell Newman says how come they are not all coming here for healthcare? Will they all be heading south now that Mr Newman has advertised how close it is?

couldnt agree more... psycho by all accounts is spending even more mon ey we havent got on advertising in aussie newspapers telling them they cant come here...LOL.. not sure how many languages though..

mind you if psycho losses his seat on the UN over this it might all change.and of course the court case???..I dont think the greens are going to sit back in silence..

do you think its right we shift these problems on to PNG phil?????..

do you really think PNG needs more dysfunctional people.?

There's always a trade off, PNG also receives a nice funding package that supports better education and health. Do you think the people of PNG don't deserve this?

By the same token, let us in the meanwhile not deprive the people of New Guinea of the many multicultural blessings and enrichments that is planned for them through the mass-arrival of Muslims soon to descend upon their shores.

I feel proud ~ nay, jubilant! ~ that our government has finally decided to initiate and facilitate a program of enforced multiculturalism upon the stale and stagnating monocultural inertia of New Guinean society.

It's a proud moment in Australia's history. No longer are we going to selfishly keep these Muslim boat-people for our own advantage towards beefing-up our 'Multicultural Australia' credentials.
