If they want to get to Australia from Papua New Guinea, they will need to pay an extra fee: you will need to give us your clothes and get there naked. You will then spend one year as a prostitute dancing around poles. If you're a man, we will force you to watch your wife get raped. Your children will have naked pictures of them uploaded onto the Internet. Cheesy

and yet some of the nincompoops on here like Skippy think that PNG will welcome these economic bludgers with open arms, take them in, build houses for them, give them welfare to live on, pay for all medical expenses, build new hospitals to care for them and pay for their funeral when they die…

Papuans are nice people. They aren't selfish, stingy and materialistic like us Australians. That's why their mean incomes are so low compared to our's. Cheesy

If you put politics aside and look at this dispassionately; it could go two ways.

1. Rudd could have created an economic hell hole which will cost this Country untold billions on top of the 12 billion dollars Rudd has already cost us because he f....d up a boat policy that was truly working and...let 46,000 bludgers in on us.

Scenario 2

2. Rudd could have pulled off a genuinely clever bit of work. The last place on earth Country Shoppers would want to go to would be PNG, however for a genuine refugee it may well represent freedom.

The word will be well and truly out from everywhere from Indonesia to downtown Afghanistan etc.

WE will now see what a damper this move has.

There is a real possibility it could stem the tide.

Either way you look at it, Rudd is either fixing his first f.... up or creating a bigger one.

Mr Baron, would you like another go at that post, looking at it dispassionately?

Mr Hockey also alleged people sent to PNG by Labor could end up on Centrelink and MediCare "for the rest of their lives"

A TOTALLY baseless ASSUMPTION

If these refugees are settled in New Guinea - they have NO ACCESS to EITHER

( ... even as the panic sets in, Joe was being careful with his words - choosing "could" - over "would")

You got a reference for that or like everyone else (who possesses brains) shouldn't you be waiting for the details?

If they get the full dole over there they will be living like kings and I cannot see the locals liking that too much.

As with everything Rudd, devil is in the detail and implementation and so far he has not got a good record.  Belay that, he has a shocking record.

No dimwit, a reference to the assertion that those being resettled in PNG having no access to medicare or centrelink.

I cannot believe I just had to explain that to you.  You are dumber than I initially thought.

Not an 'assumption', Buzz!

An out and out LIE!!

Will be interesting to see how many times he repeats the lie, and how loud.

Check out the self professed humanitarians supporting dumping thousands of desperate people onto an impoverished third world nation by a rich nation in order to win an election?

I thought your sell out price may have been slightly higher gents.

Shame.

NO-ONE gets the dole - living outside of Australian territories
Once PROCESSED - and settled in New Guinea ( ... or rejected and sent packing) they are no longer Australia's responsibility

There will be few boats arrive once they know they're going to be sent to PNG and combined with the reward for the smugglers - it will slow the trade right down.

It's a strong deterrant - like the Pacific Solution. The right whingers have been braying for years for Abbott to revamp Howard's old policies. They should be happy even if Rudd did come up with the idea first.

This isn’t the Pacific Solution at all. It’s residency in another country.

The Pacific Solution was a network of offshore prisons. This is resettlement.

Not only is it a humanitarian solution, it’s a disincentive - who wants to live in New Guinea?

This week, we’ll see.

I’ll put a grand down on no boats by Friday.

I know it's not the Pacific Solution (my ambiguous wording),  but it should be just as effective. You might be right about the boats stopping. PNG is definitely a place no-one would go to willingly for resettlement.

As our refugee intake has now increased to 20 or 25,000 - staying in a camp in Indonesia waiting in line to be brought here safely will look like a good alternative.
