Local response to Rudd's PNG refugee plan.
Jul 22nd, 2013 at 10:40am

Thought it would be helpful to have a thread dedicated to how the people of PNG feel about the possibility of accepting asylum seekers trying to get to Australia. While the PNG Government has accepted Rudd's proposal and can see benefits in the deal, how have the PNG people responded?

I'm still working through it. It has merits as far as breaking the business model of the people smugglers. However, it is only a part solution. If the Greens solution of increasing our intake of asylum seekers waiting in Indonesia and reducing waiting times was going to relieve the pressure and stop the boats, I'd have gone with that. However, I suspect it would only result in more asylum seekers flowing into Indonesia, taking us back to square 1 as bottlenecks built up again.

I have concerns about the welfare of refugees who do end up in PNG, and how the locals will accommodate these refugees. I suspect, however, that there will few who will be prepared to make the hazardous trip to Australia and ultimately end up in PNG.

Quote:
The governor of Oro province, Gary Zuffa, has told 702 ABC Sydney the decision to settle refugees in Papua New Guinea could be very divisive.

"Who's going to finance that re-settlement? I'm assuming that Australia is," he said.

"If Australia is going to finance that re-settlement, then that's going to create a bit of hostility from the local population because these people will be given funds to start a new business, start a new life.

Quote:
Papua New Guinea's prime minister Peter O'Neil has defended his deal, saying it is nothing new and will benefit his country.

In his first public comments since the deal, he said the recent agreement was an extension of programs begun under the Howard Government.

Mr O'Neil said refugees could be resettled "any day" but there was no detail on where they might live.

"We'll get there when we start processing them," he said.

He assured Papua New Guineans the agreement was good for PNG and outlined the highways, universities and hospitals that will be built with Australian money.

Quote:
A PLAN to resettle asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea is an "agreement between two madmen", opposition leader Belden Namah says.

Mr Namah told the ABC from Singapore prime ministers Peter O'Neill and Kevin Rudd had no regard for UN conventions.

"Peter O'Neill is making decisions like a chicken with no head," he said.

"It is an agreement between two madmen.

Wow, talk about dumb. According to cods Rudd starts the people smuggling industry, no wonder you sound so ill informed you clearly are. I'm sure the rest of the world must be blaming Rudd now for all of their refugees seeing as though he started it up. Honestly ,do you ever read what you write? Your  lack of knowledge amazes me.

I suggest you read one of the PNG online newspapers and check out the letters to the editor section.
