It's a boy! Catherine gives birth to royal baby

By Dana Ford. Laura Smith-Spark and Richard Allen Greene, CNN

July 22, 2013 -- Updated 2242 GMT (0642 HKT)

London (CNN) -- With fanfare fit for a prince, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and husband Prince William welcomed their first child Monday.

The baby boy was born at 4:24 p.m., weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. A name has not yet been announced for the child, who is third in line to the throne.

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well," read an official bulletin placed outside Buckingham Palace, where crowds erupted in cheers.

People from all over the world had gathered outside Buckingham Palace to await news of the birth. At least one group of well-wishers brought flowers, champagne and a card for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Yes Pansi - I was thinking the same thing.

Our ruler decided by birth no longer seems fair in the 21st century.

I don't know how much actual ruling they do. They don't even get invited to the Bilderberg Conference.

The Royals are reptilian and parasitic, they bleed England at every opportunity, but they're well loved by the sheeples, so that's all that matters.

The Queen has never done anything wrong but she does cost a lot of money.

Are you going to buy some royal merchandise?

Maybe a cup or a table napkin?

You know I always thought that Australia was most like us in its resentment of British rule.  I would have thought that Australia would have abandoned the crown and become a republic by now.

This baby will never be King of Australia: we'll become a Republic long before he takes over.

When the Queen passes the question of a republic will probably rise again. Charles doesn't seem to have the charm the Queen has. Additionally, once the population levels of non-Europeans becomes higher the tide will turn. Personally, I don't mind our constitutional monarchy.

I'm inherently conservative, so tradition counts for a lot with me.  However, given the independent nature of Australians it just surprises me you haven't already.  The idea of being ruled by a British monarch gets my red American blood boiling! Wink

In all seriousness, I'm new here and trying very hard not to "interfere" by suggesting what Australia should/should not do...but I don't think I'd mind seeing Australia become a Republic!

If the Governor General (the monarchy's representative here) used his/her power too often, I think you'd see Australians turn against the monarchy. It's mostly symbolic at the moment. Some one can correct me here, but the last time I think the GG intervened was in the dismissal of Whitlam in the 1970s.
