It's a boy....... our new King.

I doubt he'll ever be Australia's King ... I suspect we'll be a republic long before he is crowned king.

Amen.

Long, long before.

I've got nothing against the current crop of royals, but once Liz is gone it will be a quick transition to a republic.

(Mind you, I don't want to see Liz go any time soon.)

I quite like the young royals. I don't care so much for the queen or her philandering retard of a son, but the sons of Diana are quite endearing in a way. And Catherine makes a perfect princess.

The new prince makes his first media appearance...Ohhhhh.

I must admit they make a nice looking family. Dianna would be smiling down on them.

The problem with becoming a republic is that they rig the question on the vote giving us no valid alternative.

The most entertaining thing about this is that Prince Charles actually thinks he's a grandfather...

Must agree there SOB. Being that Howard was such a monarchist, we had no chance at a viable option.

Australians were obviously after a U.S. type system, probably more because we want our elected leader to stay until we choose to vote him/her out.

I think it's a good thing that Rudd is doing to make it more difficult, but not impossible, to change PM's mid-term. Then again, he didn't want to bring it up when Gillard was leader  Grini

You know I always thought that Australia was most like us in its resentment of British rule.  I would have thought that Australia would have abandoned the crown and become a republic by now.

When the Queen passes the question of a republic will probably rise again. Charles doesn't seem to have the charm the Queen has. Additionally, once the population levels of non-Europeans becomes higher the tide will turn. Personally, I don't mind our constitutional monarchy.

I'm inherently conservative, so tradition counts for a lot with me.  However, given the independent nature of Australians it just surprises me you haven't already.  The idea of being ruled by a British monarch gets my red American blood boiling! Wink

In all seriousness, I'm new here and trying very hard not to "interfere" by suggesting what Australia should/should not do...but I don't think I'd mind seeing Australia become a Republic!

If the Governor General (the monarchy's representative here) used his/her power too often, I think you'd see Australians turn against the monarchy.

And you'd be right...

Something that Peter Morgan wrote into his play 'The Audience' was particularly interesting and puts into perspective the reason that the institution of Monarchy works so well in Britain...

He had the Queen, played by Helen Mirren, say of the Monarchy's endurance "If you want to know the reason the monarchy has survived, look to her Prime Ministers".

The meaning being that as the Monarch is politically inert and must always take the position of supporting the Prime Minister, means that the PM has no political rival outside of the House of Commons...  Whenever the monarch screws up, its the Prime Minister of the day who comes to their rescue.

He is.  William is actually Charles' kid...which explains why they're both such dweebs.

Last night Channel 7 News spent 16 minutes of a half hour program slobbering on because some Pommy woman popped out a sprog.

The French had the right idea. So did Cromwell, but then the Brits didn't have the stomach to carry it through.

The British royal family is a circus for sheep.

Channel 7 "News"?  You're very generous.

So, there were no sharks swimming in the ocean or footballers having lunch yesterday?  Hmmm, slow "news" day for Channel 7.

I have never been able to fathom the conservative love affair with the royal family.

Righties are supposed to believe you make your own way in life by individual effort.

But they are obsessed by people Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided who live a pampered existence simply because they slipped out from between a certain pair of legs.

Amusing, but also pathetic. One rule for "royalty" and a different one for everybody else.
