Aussie - Rather than beat around the bush here, we'll cut to the chase and I'll ask you outright.

Do you believe Australia has an overall significantly higher cost of living that the European Union and the United States?

Yeah, I know we do, but I also know that my son-in-law Pom 'environmental engineer' earns more money dealing with sh1t in Australia than he does doing the same job in the UK.  Same with his Wife, my youngest step-daughter.  She earns much more in Australia as an OT than she does in Scotland.

Are you sure that your rellies are telling the truth, Aussie?  I certainly would never, ever tell my rellies how much I really earn as it is none of their business.

Do you discuss over the dinner table, with friends and rellies, your current financial arrangements ? A discussion about who earns what can lead to many porkies ...  Grin  Plus, since you said that you know absolutely zero about "economics" why would they tell you anything? Are they coveting your taxi cab licence?  Grin

Income and financial matters are discussed quite openly in my family, as well as between me and my inlaws too.

Half the time they are fishing for financial advice, the other half they want their tax done for nothing.

I dont think money is the taboo subject it once was many years ago.

Sure, people discuss money matters over the dinner table but unless you are their Accountant and see their financial papers you have no idea what they really earn.

Most people lie about their financial situation. Fact.  Wink

I am their accountant, so I guess they know better than to lie to me since they know 1 - It could lead to the wrong advice and 2 - I do their tax returns so I see it anyway.

You are right about some beefing up their salaries.  I remember having a beer after the local footy and overhearing a guy brag about how much his bonus was and how much he made last year being in the six figures, only for me to smile thinking "I did your return when I did your parents business ones and you didnt even crack $50k."  Sadly I couldnt correct him for obvious reasons but it was amusing if nothing else.

nope, I am quite content with my income, I've no need to up anything. I make more than some and less than others ... the actual $$$ amounts are irrelevant anyway, It's what you do with it that matters.

That so true john. Take andre for example, he makes well over $250k, pays less tax and has a lower cost of living according to him, yet still expects taxpayer funded child care because it's difficult for he and his wife.
