speaking of the Fat Rudds...
Jul 28th, 2013 at 7:12pm

on the political board there's talk of the Rudds and how fat and unfit they are...

they are not setting a good example to our young generation... as leaders... etc

but has the horse already Bolted?

Super-obese patients scanned at vet hospital

VICTORIA'S obesity epidemic has hit new levels as Melbourne hospitals are forced to refer super-obese patients to a veterinary hospital for scans.

In recent months two patients have been sent to the University of Melbourne's Veterinary Hospital in Werribee because none of the state's hospitals have human CT scanners large enough to accommodate them.

The Sunday Herald Sun understands that one patient was referred because they were heavier than the 220kg weight limit of hospital CT scanners, while a second had difficulty fitting into the equipment.

Instead, the patients were treated in a heavy-duty scanner usually used to examine horsesShocked

The cases come as experts warn the health system has to adapt to cope with a 10-fold increase over 20 years in the number of super-obese Victorians, and obesity rates spiralling from 8 per cent to 25 per cent.

University of Melbourne spokesperson Nerissa Hannink confirmed there had been two occasions where hospitals had requested to use the Werribee facilities.

"The Department of Health granted permission for each scanning procedure," Ms Hannink said.

A working group guiding the Department of Health recommended hospitals providing weight-loss operations should have X-ray equipment and scales that have a minimum capacity of more than 150kg.

Department spokesman Bram Alexander said hospitals account for the need of larger patients when replacing equipment.

"Where a health service is unable to undertake the clinically required diagnostic imaging, the health service is able to contact the department for advice," Mr Alexander said.

Western Health executive director of operations Russell Harrison said the hospital and department could make special arrangements for patient imaging.

"Equipment at Western Health has a capacity limit of 220kg for CT scanning and 158kg for MRI. However, from 180kg upwards on CT, there may be table dysfunction," Mr Harrison said.

"Weight is not the only guiding parameter, as total patient girth may limit travel through the CT machine."

Royal Melbourne Hospital refused to comment on the transfers.

Prof John Dixon, head of Baker IDI institute's weight assessment and management clinic, said the number of super-obese patients had presented a challenge for the health system.

"The number in that category are not small anymore. They are not extraordinary. Every GP has patients like this and we need to adapt our health services," Prof Dixon said.

"All of our public hospitals are being overwhelmed by the people in this category, rather than it being a rare event."

not to mention the super sized Ambulances tax payers have had to buy for these fat slobs...  Angry

I think that we are getting used to seeing fat people on TV all of the time and its just become acceptable...

Fat is the new look...

we're becoming a nation of Super Slobs...

we have to have Fat Ambulances... people are getting x rays in machines designed for horses ffs...

fat b@stards complain because they have to pay for two seats on an aeroplane as their Fat asses cover 2 seats..

we shouldn't be making supersized appliances for lazy Fat Slobs... if they can't get out of the house for medical treatment then leave them there without food until they trim down and can make it out...

Well thats a bit general isnt it? There arent that many super fat ppl in australia or there would be oversized clothing stores everywhere for 1 thing and we would see them for another. Also some ppl put on weight because of illness or medication through no fault of their own. Unless you are a sock you wouldn't know about the guy I talked about last time this came up. He was skinny and he got some kind of cancer and suddenly he bloated up so big he had to wear a blanket then he died. It all happened in about 6 months and it was pretty obvious to anyone that knew him that it wasnt natural weight gain yet ppl called him names and made derogatory remarks anyway.

The Rudd's are just a bit on the pudgy side, nothing out of the ordinary in today's society.....physically, they fit in quite well and a lot of people would identify with them because they're a bit overweight.

Not everyone lifts and not everyone has a perfect figure.....whatever the hell that is anyway.

The irony is that pollies spend a lot of money telling us to eat our fruit and veges and it's obvious they're not doing it......meddling government, hypocrites, both sides, that's politics, do as we say not as we do.

Rudd should stand next to Joe Hockey more.

I commend big Joe for undertaking his transformation, however sadly the method avaliable to Joe isnt really avaliable to everyone as it costs around $15,000 unless you can claim it under private health at which case who knows.

Based on all the assoiciated costs of obesity on the public and private sector with related illnesses, I would like to see things like Lap Band proceedures more assessable to people who are in the extreme position where drastic action is needed.

Im leaded to believe that there is a waiting list to be able to have it done through the public system but sadly you will be dead by the time it comes up.

You would think that MILLIONAIRES would have better dress sense and get a tummy tuck if they were serious about losing weight.

Where does Therese buy her clothes? Vinnies Boutique?  Grin

Nerferti getting a tummy tuck isnt even a remotely serious proceedure for weight loss, and does absolutley nothing to correct the cause in the first place.

Proceedures like lap band are as they affect peoples abilities to over eat which is one of the major issues.

Its okay, in your bid to try and chuck a bit of mud at someone you in turn made yourself look like an idiot.  Congratulations.

I have no idea what the procedures are, I don't have a weight problem.  Therese and Kev obviously have.  Perhaps they should just cut down on the intake ... shake their heads (No) instead of nodding (Yes) when offered extra food.

You have chucked insults at Abbott ... haven't you? Tony, his wife and kids are of normal weight. There is no excuse for getting as obese as the Rudds.

I prefer to insult people for their actions as opposed to their appearance.  That says it all really.

Agreed. But opinion is pretty much universal on Rudd's wife.

Her dress sense is irrelevant.
