Camps for the unemployed or wayward teens can, and do, work.

But they are not based on robotic military lines. They teach people to think for themselves, not blindly obey others.

They encourage attenders to face their fears, eg if afraid of heights they are persuaded to climb a tree.

This is all about raising their self esteem.

And one rule above all others: attenders must be willing. If not it's just wasted time.

Garbage. You just think they should.

The country should be distancing itself as far as possible from the lunatic Far Right.

The election will tell the story. If the majority of the populace were leftards then the Greens would have been in power ages ago.

That's OK, I don't vote for the Far Left either.

But, enjoy your delusion if it helps you feel better.

It's no delusion. Both Rudd and Abbott have proposed a work for the dole scheme, and one of them will win.

We already have a work for the dole' scheme, thanks to the maggot, Howard.

Its purpose is purely punitive, there is no training whatsoever, and
there are no positive outcomes at the end.

In short, it simply doesn't work.

Nothing proposed by either party addresses the real issues, just promises to
make life even harder for the unemployed.

And I don't support either party's 'policy' on the unemployed.

It worked for every one I knew who done it. It's to help long term unemployed get a bit of self-esteem and bit of extra cash. It's only "punitive" if you've got a persecution complex or live the delusion that no one ought to tell you what to do.

All I can say to that is "Bull-shyt".

It helps no-one.

It was designed to be punitive, and it is used as punishment.

Get facts, or get stuffed.

See, this is where varying perspectives comes into play. To you it is punitive, because you have an entitlement mentality and a persecution complex. To those I know that did it, they benefited from it; gained some self-esteem, extra cash, which meant purchasing things they previously couldn't, and being able to hold their head up.

Its amazing how these things go around in circles.  We already had Howard re-introduce the baby payment scheme that Labor had initially brought in a century earlier.

Will we see the re-introduction of conscription, and the White Australia policy?

Well - yes - we could easily see a reintroduction of National Service as a 'solution' to all this excess personpower, and hopefully that would give some training - BUT - what use is training in say, truck driving - when the jobs are not there?

As for White Australia - it may well be that we are seeing a resurgence of that with the refugee policy(ies), that seem to be excluding those who are not well.. white...

I think most of the middle easterners would be considered white. So your hypothesis would be incorrect.

Did you train to become an ignorant abusive smack-knuckle, of is it a natural skill?

Your claim that WfD is beneficial alone puts you into the 'idiot' bracket. It isn't, and it never was. Keating had a FAR
superior system with real wages and real work. And real jobs at the end.

1/
I HAVE A JOB!!!
How many smacking TIMES must you mob be told, eh? DO YOU? You're usually
on here during work-hours, not me.

2/ WTF is an 'entitlement mentality', FFS?I have nothing of the kind, but I do have a well-developed sense of fair play.
The treatment of the unemployed is anything but fair. I'm not being persecuted, clown, THEY ARE!! By dummies like YOU!

And the real 'entitlememt mentality' belongs to the wealthfare-addicted middle-class.

3/ $10 a week! Yeah, dumbass, they're rolling in it!

I have NOTHING to be ashamed of, pal. NOTHING!

It must be hard for you, being so bitter and twisted that you'd wish for those with virtually nothing to have even less.

When it comes to valuations and morality, there is no objective standard "out there" to gauge a good or bad valuation/morality. Instead they come from deep within each individual's psyche. A valuation, then, tells us a lot about the individual person. Hence, the varying perspectives on the work for the dole scheme can tell us a lot about a person'e attitude toward the world in general. Therefore, I'll stick by my previous judgement that you have a entitlement mentality and persecution complex, whereas my friends were quite thankful for what it did for them.

i doubt work for the dole raises self-esteem. ive done similiar schemes before and it still feels like youre at the bottom of the pile. i never got why the government finds it so hard to find people real work. just get dolies to dig ditches for the minimum wage or build roads or something. cant be that hard. or force employers to hire the non-deranged and willing unemployed.

another solution to helping the unemployed would be to crack down on age based discrimination in jobs and GAP based discrimination (not giving people a job or an interview because they have gaps of 6+ months or so on their resume). my recommendation to all people who are over 30 or have gaps is just to make up jobs and give phone number references to your mates and prep them on what to say.

You raise a few good points there.

A thought: Would discouraging the use of 12-hour shifts in favour of three 8-hour shifts be
of assistance re the unemployment problem?

It would certainly 'create' a few real jobs.

I've worked rotating 8-hour shifts before, and much prefer them to alternating 12-hour shifts.

Re WfD: I supervise a couple of mature-aged WfD participants in the course of my volunteer
work. They're fair-dinkum, and want jobs, but neither feels that WfD is helping them in any way.

I do accept that it may be beneficial for the young, or those who simply want to keep busy rather
than just sit around, but there really does need to be some structure to it, and it simply must
include some kind of training.

If participants could come away from WfD with some form of ticket/qualifications, fine, but at
present there is nothing. And I mean exactly that, nothing.

I do have some quite good ideas in this regard, and will be starting a thread around the
subject in Health & Welfare in the near future
.

EDIT: Topic started. All sensible suggestions/options welcomed.

Jeez where do to start.

1. It's not the governments job to find work for individuals, that is the individual's job to do that, the government should develop policies that promote employment, but giving you a job, get real.

2. The government cannot pay less than the minimum wage for a given job, even if it just 'digging ditches', there are companies paid to build our roads and they actually have their own people.

3. Since we don't live in a fascist or communist dictatorship, the government has no right to force companies to hire people to sit around and do nothing all day, that is what the dole is for.

The rest sounds like personal issues
