What the problem is is the opportunism of the old parties to turn a humanitarian issue to a xenophobic beat up just to garnish votes. As for increasing tax on something unhealthy cods. Without tobacco there would be many billions of dollars freed up for important public spending like education and infrastructure not to mention the many billions smoking costs businesses in lost productivity.

Kevin Rudd slashed over 30 billion in taxes in 2007 and drove interest rates down to make housing $1000's a month cheaper.
