Peter Slipper

FORMER Speaker Peter Slipper has been given a financial safety net by the federal government for ongoing civil proceedings.

The federal government has agreed to ensure former Speaker Peter Slipper is not left out of pocket after defending civil proceedings brought by his former staffer James Ashby.

Acting special minister of state Gary Gray says the decision was necessary to guard against an increasingly litigious society where politically-motivated legal action had the potential to improperly influence the work of federal MPs and senators.

And he believed the liability insurance arrangements should also apply to state parliamentarians throughout the nation.

“It’s a principle and the principle is this: that members and senators should be allowed to go about their work and their jobs without consideration for the cost that comes from potentially vexatious, politically motivated legal action,” Mr Gray told reporters in Perth.

Yeas, cods, and what pray tell, does any of that have to do with an AFP prosecution of criminal charges against Slipper.  I'm gonna be all eyes on your answer.

Some here have asked questions about why Slipper has been charged and Abbott not.  This article provides further details.

Also, note the cost associated with this prosecution which Abbott has managed to avoid, and that, concerning a much larger amount.

Quote:
PROSECUTING Sunshine Coast MP Peter Slipper for his alleged misuse of $964 in taxi vouchers could end up costing Australian taxpayers almost $70,000.

The revelation was contained in a written answer by Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions Robert Bromwich to a question in Senate estimates about the likely legal costs for the seven-day trial.

"The cost of any hearing is dependent on a number of variables including, in particular, the length of the hearing and the facts put in issue," his answer read.

"Assuming the matter proceeds to a full hearing of seven days ... and assuming the prosecution is put to strict proof at that hearing as to every fact, the defendant gives evidence and detailed closing submissions are made, it is anticipated that the prosecution's external legal and related costs for the preparation and conduct of the hearing would be approximately $69,000."

The prosecution has listed 38 witnesses - 31 civilian and seven Australian Federal Police officers - for the trial to be heard in the ACT Magistrates Court from December 2.

it fails to mention this govt has agreed to pay all slippers court costs..

I remember Whitlam being sued and he was allowed legal aid..in other words.. his costs were picked up by you know who...

why do you act as if a Lib is the first and only one.?.

if you think ICAC NSW Inc.. isnt costing the tax payers...then do I feel sorry for you?..

Does it matter who pays the court costs? It's ridiculous to spend $70 000 to get back $900, when he has already offered to pay back the money.

He could be dobbed in for abusing his MP travel arrangements, just like Slipper was dobbed in.  The only difference between the two is that Abbott has not been charged.

I’ll try to explain what Abbott has done concerning ComCars.

You must have seen MPs arriving at Parliament in distinctive white vehicles, driven by a bloke generally in uniform.  That is a ComCar.  It is Government owned and is made available to MPs to use for travel for work related purposes.  It is impossible to imagine that an MP would not be 100% aware that he was travelling in a ComCar given its distinctive appearance, and that it is chauffeur driven.  You must have heard of Abbott’s book, titled ‘Battle Lines’  a private venture of his, written by him and sold to the public who pay ‘him’ money to buy it.  That money goes into his private wallet.

When authors’ books hit the Book Stores, it is usual that they attend at the Stores to promote the sale of their book, sign the cover and all that stuff.  Abbott did exactly that and there is not the slightest problem in his doing so. The problem arises, the ‘crime’ committed when he uses ComCars to travel to the Book Stores and anywhere else for the private purpose of promoting his book. Do you understand?

one of my daughters used to work at comcar.. so idiot I know more than you do...

where have I said abbott did no wrong..

do you undertsand???? bush lawyer.?

. btw did he use comcars to take him to male only bath houses...like some sleaze from the left did.. I do not recall you claiming he had committed a CRIME...

what about that other sleaze..Mal Colson who drove back and forth from Qld..

its also very noticable you havent said a word about.. the ICAC PAIR...if you want to find some real C RIME look in your own back yard...

then again that would mean taking off your blinkers.. and that wont happen will it?...

claiming travel when going  on a book tour and then paying the money back is a real CRIME no doubt about it..

going to male bathouses and keeping  the car waiting until he had finished is A OK if you a lefty..dont worry we get it.

“It’s a principle and the principle is this: that members and senators should be allowed to go about their work and their jobs without consideration for the cost that comes from potentially vexatious, politically motivated legal action,” Mr Gray told reporters in Perth.

That is to defend the allegations by Ashby, not the trail for misuse of expenses ..... everything must be such a blur in your world

Terrific and useless rant, cods.  Do you understand the significant difference between the civil action involving Ashby, and the criminal prosecution by the AFP?

of course she doesn't, but she hides her ignorance by ranting about something totally nonsensical and probably irrelevant.
