US$61 A Tonne ~ Europeans Lift CO2 Pollution Price
Aug 7th, 2013 at 11:42am

Switzerland is set to increase its carbon tax from 36 francs to 60 francs per tonne of CO2 (equivalent to $US36 and $US61) in 2014. The move to almost double its price on carbon pollution was announced by the Swiss government last month, after the country missed its emissions reduction target of 8 per cent below 1990 levels at the end of 2012 by a few percentage points.

So looks like Australia's carbon pollution price will rise steeply in the near future.

Bad, bad, bad.

Australia should abandon the stupid idea of linking the tax to a carbon price we have no control over.

Set the tax level, broaden the base it applies to, use the money on renewables and projects like subsidizing household solar/insulation etc.

Climate report warns extreme weather events are now the norm

Climate scientists in the United States say extreme weather events and warming temperatures are the new norm.

The American Meteorological Society has released its annual snapshot of the world's climate, which concludes disastrous weather events like Hurricane Sandy in the US and droughts and floods in Australia, Africa and South America will become more frequent.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-08-07/climate-report/4869646

Going in hard and fast is the best and cheapest path. The carbon pollution price will rise and rise so to counter.

In the real world – world-wide emissions are going up and up as population increases and 100’s of millions of people in developing countries get a taste of wealth and increase their per capita emissions.

To think for one minute this is going to change anything, sets Australia on a dangerous path of not acting to protect the country as climate change effects our country more and more.

Tax pollution use the money to prepare for the onset of AGW and on renewables and subsidies for house holds.

the interesting thing is that the pervious price which was already huge FAILED.  but in the way of the Europeans economic formula, a failed policy just means DOUBLE it and try again.  there is a reason why the entire continent except Germany is bankrupt.

not with the ETS.  there are no examples of ETS' actually working anywhere.

Good news.

Looks like Kev may have called it right by scrapping the fixed price period a year earlier than planned.

Well done Kevin.

No - that is 100% wrong.

There are definitely examples of ETS's working very successfully.

The US Clean Air Act implemented an ETS to address increasing pollution and after 40 years of operation is has been a resounding success:

After the Clean Air Act's first 20 years, in 1990, it prevented more than 200,000 premature deaths, and almost 700,000 cases of chronic bronchitis were avoided. Over the last 20 years, total emissions of the six principal air pollutants have decreased by more than 41 percent, while the Gross Domestic Product has increased by more than 64 percent. Through continued innovation and successful implementation, the Clean Air Act will deliver even more benefits over the next 40 years.

Please don't post nonsense.

No it won't.  Don't be silly.

Firstly - we don't have a "carbon tax" - we have an emissions trading scheme with a 3 year fixed price period.
Secondly - in the unlikely event we do have an "Abbott Government" - he will still not control the Senate and will not repeal anything.
