About a Boy

I watched this movie last night for maybe the 4th or 5th time but it was like I was watching it for the first time. Maybe I'm just a slow learner.
It's like a multi-layer cake.
On the surface is a sweet little comedy and I still enjoy it for that and get as many laughs.
Dig down a bit and you get social commentary on the emptiness of self-indulgence and material possesions as life goals. I can identify with that. Hugh Grant can handle that part in his sleep I guess.
Get down further and you find more social commentary (always served up with humour) on the difficulties of sole parenting, from the parent and the child's viewpoint, the loneliness and the depression. Again I can appreciate the messages here from my own life experience. Toni Colette does a great job with this role. (Australia produces quite a lot of great actors for a small country.)
It's not that I didn't appreciate these different features before, although when I first saw it at the movies all those years ago I probably only took away the humour.
All in all I think it's a great little movie and probably underrated.

Know the enemies of a civil society by their public behaviour, by their fraudulent claim to be liberal-progressive, by their propensity to lie and, above all, by their attachment to authoritarianism.

Wow! bogarde ~ you need to move on.

Life's too short to watch repeats. There must be hundreds of fairly good movies that you haven't seen yet.

No, sorry but there are not that many good movies imo, as a proportion of the total output..
And when I find a good one I can enjoy it several times

Can't argue with you there.

An awful lot of crap gets distributed from Hollywood nowadays.

Here's one that has been recommended to me. I'll check it out soon.

We probably have different tastes. I am not into action movies or crime, although I do enjoy a good sci-fi movie. Trouble is there is just so much gratuitous violence.

If you're married you're probably restricted to watching only 10% of movies shown on TV.

Wives simply don't have the same tastes as the blokes.
