Greens say ALP, Coalition 'running scared' on mining tax
ABC Rural
By Babs McHugh

Greens leader Christine Milne wants the mining tax increased instead of possible changes to the GST.

On the campaign trail in Hobart this morning, she reiterated that the Greens policy is to increase the tax.

Ms Milne accused the major parties of running scared on the issue.      Sad

"There's no use Labor and the Coalition having a go-nowhere debate on the GST when there's money to be had from fixing the mining tax right now.

"I think most Australians are really fed up with the fact there's almost an agreement between Liberal, Labor and the big end of town - the mining industry, to not talk about the mining tax.

"Let's not get the money from the people who can afford to pay - with more than 80 per cent of overseas shareholders."      Sad

Ms Milne says the major parties won't talk about the flawed mining tax because they're 'running scared' from the mining industry.

"Because the mining industry ran a major TV campaign against Kevin Rudd, and it terrified the political parties (ALP and Coalition)."

"And they made a determination there and then that they would accept the fact that the big miners would not have to pay a fair share."      Sad

The ALP says there'll be no changes to the tax if it retains power.

The Coalition has pledged to remove it altogether if it is voted in.

Come come. Why would you tax foreign mining companies' profits when you can tax pensioners' groceries?

Apples and oranges, innit.

The 'irrelevance party'.  and if anyone in the greens bother to read business reports they would discover that miners are currently not making much profit at all and some making losses. I cant see any mining tax working on companies that aren't making huge profits anyhow.

but good on the Greens for promoting policies that verge on the insane.

Trust the Greens to run away with Labor's latest scare campaign and make an issue out of nothing.
Why are they so gullable?
Too many illicit drugs perhaps.

Yes, cods they do want it stopped altogether.
They also want to see far higher Centrelink payments made to the unemployed.
They also want to see tens of thousands more of unemployable non English speaking country shoppers in our community that welfare can take care of for the rest of their natural lives.
They believe that the revenue that mining currently produces can be replaced by a renewable green source like canned sunshine or such.
In short, they are off with the fairies and should not be taken seriously.
