people want this guy in parliament

Quote:
NATIONAL: The best predictor of someone’s future behaviour is their past behaviour. Which means that with Mal Brough winning pre-selection for the federal seat of Fisher, parliament is in for a sideshow the likes of which it hasn’t seen since… well, the last time Brough was there.
Brough’s win in the Liberal National Party’s pre-selection for the seat of Fisher means he’ll almost certainly be back in federal parliament by 2013.

But contrary to widespread media reports, Fisher is not a safe seat. It holds a margin of less than eight percent, way down on the glory days of 20-plus percent in 2004 which it enjoyed under Peter Slipper.

Still, if the predicted electoral wipeout of Labor in Queensland comes true, Brough will likely win the seat with an increased margin.

There’s also a broad expectation that Brough will walk straight back into the ministry if he wins office. And there’s widespread fear in black Australia that the portfolio will be Aboriginal Affairs, given Brough’s boys own adventure in 2007 with the Northern Territory intervention.

I think the fear is misplaced.

When the Libs merged with the Nats in Queensland, Brough was the leading figure opposing the move. He had a dummy-spit, resigned as president, and fired shots from the sidelines in a bid to wreck the process.

That makes Brough today about as popular among his conservative colleagues as a refugee at a Liberal Party convention.

Brough won pre-selection courtesy of a good old-fashioned membership drive (which some have unkindly suggested is also known as a branch stack). Whatever it was, it was enough to get him across the line in Fisher, but with high profile federal Libs like Joe Hockey, Julie Bishop and Malcolm Turnbull lining up to back ‘the other guy’ – rising star James McGrath – Brough is unlikely to simply walk back into a cabinet position.

Even less so with the stink that surrounds him on the Slipper affair.

And none of that factors in the risk that the Liberals might actually discover that Brough was not only a terrible Minister for Indigenous Affairs, but he was only ever a syllable and a decision away from saying and doing something really, really silly.

With that in mind, it’s worth revisiting some of the policy disasters over which Mal Brough presided during the Howard years.

1. DESTINATION ANYWHERE

2. THE GREAT (WHITE) AUSTRALIAN DREAM

3. STASHING CASH WHILE ROME BURNS

4. SECRET MEN’S BUSINESS

5. IT MAY HAVE BEEN MY IDEA, BUT IT AIN’T MY FAULT!

6. A $1 MILLION PORKIE

7. BLACK CASH, WHITE PORK-BARREL

8. A POOL OF EASY MONEY

9. LAND RIGHTS FOR WHITES

10. A DEMOUNTABLE PROMISE

So he wasn't installed by faceless ones like Labor do with some candidates?

Gee, so Brough is guilty of having an individual opinion?  That must be a concept hard to grasp for Lefties....?

Huh

I have posted a zillion times (yes Mr Mitty....a zillion) that the local LNP's endorsement of Brough is bizarre.  What is also weird is that the local Media are giving him a pretty smooth ride notwithstanding that his character has been seriously found wanting in a series of adverse conclusions drawn by Rares J in the Ashby Judgment (which is under appeal.)  It can safely be said in public by anyone that Rares found Brough had conspired with others (Ashby and Doane to name but two) to unlawfully abuse the judicial process for personal and political gain.  He was also found to be up to his eyeballs in the theft by Ashby of Slipper's personal diary so that it could be handed on to a journalist.

Ashby's solicitor, Harmer, was also the subject of severe adverse findings and comments by Rares J.  Harmer appealed, and, as I said, that appeal decision is yet to be given.

But...the relevant thing is ~ Brough did not appeal, so it is highly likely he will go to his grave having been determined to be a person utterly unsuitable to be a MHR.

if his finding was that he dis something 'unlawfully' then why have no criminal charges been filed??  Most likely because any DPP looking at the case finds that the judges claims are idiotic.  The judge had very clear political opinions that he expressed and have since been papered over.

In the meantime Brough - a popular minister - will be elected and become a minister.  so what?

Because the Ashby case was 'civil' in nature, so Judges there tend to use 'unlawful' as opposed to 'illegal.'  That does not mean Brough may not yet be charged with the crime of conspiracy to steal.

Even if he is not, the judicial adverse findings remain intact as does a serious permanent stain on his character and integrity.

your understanding of 'unlawful' is a bit quaint.  Homicide is also 'unlawful'.

The judge grossly over-stepped the mark and frankly almost nobody cares.  outside of political tragics, no one gives a rats.  and they will vote for Mal Brough in an increasing margin.
