Abbott's Direct Action idiocy risks $35bn blowout.

Quote:
A report released today and prepared by energy and carbon emission analysts RepuTex shows the conservative Liberal-National opposition’s Direct Action plan for climate change could result in a $35 billion budget blowout.

The RepuTex analysis found that, under the coalition’s current plan, Australia’s emissions will continue to rise sharply, putting the minimum five per cent emissions target in danger and making stronger targets untenable.

The RepuTex modelling found that an extra $35 billion in funding (out to 2020) would be required for the coalition’s current policy to achieve Australia’s minimum target of a five per cent cut in carbon pollution.

The RepuTex modelling found that the current emissions trading scheme can be scaled up to achieve the 25 per cent target at minimal extra cost to the Australian economy.

The RepuTex modelling also found that Direct Action is not an economically efficient way to cut emissions.

Under the Labor government’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) it is expected that companies will face a carbon price of about $38 a tonne by 2020.

However, under Direct Action the government would need to spend approximately $58 a tonne by 2020 to ensure the minimum five per cent target is met.

We all know subsidising polluters rather than forcing them to factor in the cost of their pollution is a hugely inefficient way of reducing pollution. That Abbott would even consider replacing what has proven to be a very efficient market mechanism for something as unwieldy and unworkable as direct action, should automatically exclude him from any position of power whatsoever.

big polluters don't pay...

when are you green nuts going to stop this lie?

they pass on the increase to mums, dads, pensioners and people unemployed...

the big polluters have also been OVER compensated by the idiotic Labor/Green conalition...

there is also no evidence of Global Warming caused by carbon...

Scientists are paid mouth pieces of the governments and say what you want them to say...

open your OWN EYES and go see for yourself..

It looks like Tony has tied up the anti-science denier vote even though he wants us to pay an exorbitant $58 for a problem they refuse to accept exists.

Funny how they're happy to pay more just because Abbott's hinted that he might not believe the science either.

unlike Labor... the Liberals don't let the budget just keep blowing further and further into debt..

it's just another made up story by desperate Labor worshipers who worship political parties like football teams...

how embarrassing...

The Libs are unlikely to let this one blow out, they would need to care about the results for that to happen. Direct action is only pretending to do something, they will spend the minimum to achieve that impression.

Direct action is a political position only used because after Tony had recomended a tax and had to take it off the table and opposed his own party's ETS there was no other option left that he hadn't already supported and opposed, mostly at the same time.

unlike Labor..... the Liberals don't let the budget just keep blowing further and further into debt..

You habn't noticed the Libs unfunded spending commitments or their latest confirmation that they will spend instead of trying to put the budget in surplus???

The current plan presented just the other day by Abbott and Hockey is to let the budget continue to blow out for another decade at least.

unlike Labor..... the Liberals don't let the budget just keep blowing further and further into debt..

Yep this is exactly the Liberals current plan - to let the budget just keep blowing further and further into debt.

You need to check the facts before making up you stories, the opposite of what you are saying is the truth as presented by the Liberal leader and shadow treasurer. (Heckle and Jeckle) Probably the most inept economic team in Australias history.

I think you are confusing the economic illiterates currently inhabiting the Coalition's leadership team, with previous liberal governments. Which is rather ironic considering that's akin to worshipping a political party.
