Why roll it out to countryside areas first where it has the slowest and lowest payback timeframe?

In a capital project, any Financial Analyst worth a bag of sand knows you roll it to the highest uptake and with most reasonable cost payback method???

That's the high density capital cities.

article in full - Quote:
The national broadband network could save households thousands of dollars by the end of the decade through better productivity, cheaper communication and reduced travel costs.

A Deloitte Access Economics analysis for the government says the average household would get $3800 in benefits a year by 2020 through using the NBN.

It quantifies the savings, in 2013 dollars, for communications, e-commerce, online entertainment services, travel savings, employment by teleworkers and productivity.

"Added together, these estimates suggest very significant household benefits from broadband," the report, posted on the broadband department website, states.

But it notes its estimates don't take into account the costs of broadband or equipment like modems and computers.

It cautions the report is not a cost-benefit analysis of high-speed broadband.

"Many of the benefits will emerge gradually, as consumers find price discounts and variety online, as more employees are allowed to telework, and as people get more accustomed to accessing services online," the report states.

"There will be a lot of change from the broadband revolution and there will be a gradual transition this decade."

Labor intends to highlight the report on Wednesday, saying it shows the NBN will not only transform the Australian economy and improve national competitiveness, but also directly benefit every family.

I don't see much in it.

It's an odd report.  It finds that by the end of the decade we will save money by shopping online.  We are already doing that, I thought? And nobody has ever suggested that the current ADSL 2+ is too slow for shopping. And communication?  we already do that and it is hard to see a fixedline phone system in any way replacing the smartphone network.

It just sounds like fantasy and nonsense.

That was my point.  We keep getting these reports telling us about all the amazing things the NBN can do and so far. we are already doing it and have been for years!  Online shopping?  Been doing that on dial-up 18 years ago!

Would this form part of the cost benefits analysis you have spoken about in the past?

Why are people so quick to dismiss this report?

The coalition is claiming their NBN will be just as effective, and cheaper.  As a result, based on that assumption, that a Coalition NBN would also provide $3,800 worth of benefits, plus additional indirect benefits as a government would have more dollars in the bank to do other things?

Think outside the box a little people.

we dismiss it because it is talking about things we are already doing and doing quite well.  Is there a single online shopping site that cant be accessed unless you have super-fast internet?  People hardly use a land-line at all now but rather smartphones... on 3G.

these 'benefits' are either illusory or already hear.  I think the writer probably hoped no one would notice that we have been buying online for nearly two decades now.
