Why are people so quick to dismiss this report?

The coalition is claiming their NBN will be just as effective, and cheaper.  As a result, based on that assumption, that a Coalition NBN would also provide $3,800 worth of benefits, plus additional indirect benefits as a government would have more dollars in the bank to do other things?

Think outside the box a little people.

we dismiss it because it is talking about things we are already doing and doing quite well.  Is there a single online shopping site that cant be accessed unless you have super-fast internet?  People hardly use a land-line at all now but rather smartphones... on 3G.

these 'benefits' are either illusory or already hear.  I think the writer probably hoped no one would notice that we have been buying online for nearly two decades now.

What's the market breakdown?

Does this mean you oppose the Coalitions NBN policy as well?

Oh, the fact it was released today was a bit of a give away  Grin Grin Grin

Not withstanding it is a jumble of meaningless generalisations and untested assumptions based on rubbery projections.

I just heard Kevin Krudd quoting it, as he visited a 'NBN cable factory' here in Melbourne, so it seems to have found its intended purpose.

Labor's NBN is far too expensive and will be obsolete by the time they have rolled it out. The cost blow-out has already made the Labor government into the liars we have come to hate and expect.

In a nutshell yes, the whole NBN is and will be a disaster. No government should have undertaken the project.

Who was it that built Australia's telecommunications infrastructure in the first place?

Irrelevant. We already have infrastructure to build on. Don't put up nonsense about telegraph and bicycle couriers or pigeons or whatever, it is a childish attempt to undermine valid points of view.

I'm completely supportive of a healthy competitive telecommunications market in Australia, and we have created the exact opposite with this version of NBN. Ultimately how do you think this will work out? How has this happened? Well, I think we all know the answer to that...

This is a perfect example of government attempting to 'pick a winner', and it is a complete failure on every level from concept thru to roll out and uptake.

And copper wire - pure extravagance! Iron is cheaper and stronger. The wire  being stronger, the poles can be further apart. We save on both wire and poles.  Roll Eyes

Irrelevant. We already have infrastructure to build on. ...

Of course, nothing similar was true when:
  • telephone replaced telegraph;
  • copper replaced iron wires;
  • underground cable replaced overhead wire;
  • individual lines replaced party lines.

You evidently have faith that markets will provide. Markets are fine in theory, but the history of Australia is replete with examples such as telecommunications, where they've proved inadequate. I'm old enough to remember a lot of that history.

I hope for our sakes the Coalition cancels their NBN project then, because it is claiming all the benefits for a fraction of the cost.

And a line for each house - such waste! Party lines work just fine, why do we need our own line?

im simply mocking the report.  IN fact, every pro-NBN report that comes out seems to refer us to this wonderful brought new world of faster internet where we can do all the things we currently are doing anyhow.  it is strange tp behold.
