If we took your line of thinking, more likely we'd be cat food. Ignoring reality tends to do that sort of thing.

Why are people so quick to dismiss this report?

The coalition is claiming their NBN will be just as effective, and cheaper.  As a result, based on that assumption, that a Coalition NBN would also provide $3,800 worth of benefits, plus additional indirect benefits as a government would have more dollars in the bank to do other things?

Think outside the box a little people.

we dismiss it because it is talking about things we are already doing and doing quite well.  Is there a single online shopping site that cant be accessed unless you have super-fast internet?  People hardly use a land-line at all now but rather smartphones... on 3G.
these 'benefits' are either illusory or already hear.  I think the writer probably hoped no one would notice that we have been buying online for nearly two decades now.

Bullsh1t .... do you just make it up as you go?

I reckon you'll find that physics gets in the way.

just like how physics was supposed to prevent processors faster than 1Ghz and hard drives bigger than 1Gb and... you get the drift.  The supposed limits of physics seem to be routinely broken where technology is concerned.  Remember how copper wires would never take more than 56kbps?  now I takes 100Mbps.  I wouldn't get too wrapped up in the 'this is impossible' predictions.

I hope for our sakes the Coalition cancels their NBN project then, because it is claiming all the benefits for a fraction of the cost.

Actually, it's two thirds of the cost. Nobody credible is pretending that the Coalition's plan will deliver any benefits.
Can Australia afford the Coalition’s NBN?

Nope, Tony told us his is half the price and just as good.

It can be 100% cheaper because as it turns out we dont need an NBN anyway.

Abbott's copper plan costs $29.5 billion

Rudd's optic fibre to the home plan costs $44 billion

How is 29.5 billion half of 44 billion?

Abbott's lan connects 22% of homes. Rudd's plan connects 93% of homes.

Abbott's plan = 3/4 of the price with less than 1/4 of the results.

Dumb!

If you are going to spend tens of billions of dollars of taxpayers money, i want to see some tangible benefit.

Abbott's plan costs tens of billions of dollars and delivers negligible benefit except for the wealthy who can spend the extra thousand of dollars it will cost to hook up to his system.

why do you have to be so stupid?  Abbotts plan connects the SAME number as the current NBN.  the expected cost of the NBN is $60B plus as we will find out when the NBN business plan is released AFTER the election.

try again.

It's only two thirds if Telstra gives them access to the final few meters from the node to the home for free. ... what are the chances of that happening?

I'm betting Abbotts second rate service for FTN will cost more then FTH

As a shareholder, I'll be very angry if Telstra doesn't screw every last cent out of it.

As one with a little experience in the industry, I'll be very surprised if the Telstra copper can deliver anything like what's promised, without upgrading and maintenance costing tens of billions of dollars. Together with the probability that FTTN will be obsolete before the Coalition plan can be completed (if it isn't already), plus the higher running costs and we have a fiasco of the first order.

No, because there is nothing there that I cant do on my smart phone - right NOW.

That was my point.  We keep getting these reports telling us about all the amazing things the NBN can do and so far. we are already doing it and have been for years!  Online shopping?  Been doing that on dial-up 18 years ago!

And 18 years ago, you'd have been opposing ADSL because 'I can do everything I need to do on dialup'.

Now, look at all the things you can do now, that you could not do then, and increase that exponentially over the next 20 or 50 years.

Copper ADSL going to be adequate?

I don't think so, and neither do the experts (real experts, not self-styled 'x-spurts' on internet fora).

smack, you're a Luddite.

another supposed 'expert'.  well we will get a chance to see, wont we since Abbott will be winning and the FTTN plan WILL be put in place.  funny thank about that VDSL which just keeps on over-riding your primary objections!

And BANG! goes your credibility right there.

The speed of light will NOT be becoming obsolete in the foreseeable future.

Not as hilarious as having a good look at the progress of the rollout of the NBN, how many years behind are we?

BY the time they get it finished there will be something new invented that doesn't involve cables, I'm thinking Wi Fi will be so superior in a decade that this cable thing will belong in a museum.

Just think about what computers were like ten years ago and now. The individual computer now is more powerful than all the computers combined that helped put a man on the moon.

And you don't think technology will outstrip the copper cable?.... Grin Grin Grin

And there goes yours.
