Mirabella in hot seat over QC lover's dying days

...it is now alleged, and what she had never admitted even to her family, was that Howard, 40 years her senior, was also her live-in lover for five years in the late 1990s...

...she had received gifts from him valued at well over $100,000 to help her election to Federal Parliament in 2001...

...she was the executor of his will and, his family believes, its sole beneficiary. If this is the case she stands to inherit Howard's $1 million house in a prime street in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton....

...she had also promised him that she'd employ him in her electorate office should she win the vote.

But soon after the election win in 2001 they began to grow apart...she is alleged to have told him, her backbencher's staff entitlement was not sufficient to employ him.

In 2002 Panopoulos met and formed a relationship with another man. Howard went back to his life. Always socially awkward, his circle shrunk to his two children and the owners of his local restaurant, Abla's.

In 2006, Panopoulos married Lieutenant-Colonel Greg Mirabella. Howard attended the Wangaratta wedding. But during Mervyn's family visit at Christmas 2006, he was given cause to worry. Colin told Mervyn he had given his former girlfriend a sum of money large enough that he had to cash in one of his pensions. The money, he said, was to help her buy a house because she and Greg could not afford it alone. Mervyn suspects, but does not know, that it was about $100,000. Further worrying Mervyn was his father's comment that Mirabella had asked him not to tell anyone about it...

Ex-National so-called 'conservative' independent? How do we know that Mrs McGowan is not another Windsor or Oakeshott?

Maybe she's another Hanson?

Pauline was never a member of the Nats.

She was a member of a Coalition party (the Liberal party).

Her downfall was because of sexism, just like Gillard's.

How? She was just plain nasty.

If there was sexism, why is she being replaced by a FEMALE independent?

I have enjoyed seeing Mirrabella blame this result on an organised effort of the greens, the ALP, Get Up and Unions, even though the Greens and ALP vote plummeted in Indi.

Talk about dillusional.

Sophie is something like 1800 behind which is fantastic news. I dont think I could have stomached her smug arrogance as a minister.
I couldn't watch QandA when she was on it.

1003 votes (all for her opponent) that were misplaced or forgotten about?

This is why the current system needs an overhaul!

Hey Verge, I'm asking you this because I gather you are in Mirabella's electorate.  I read something today that said that when Rudd delivered the sorry speech SM went about her electorate calling out to indigenous constituents "Not Sorry". Sounds extraordinary that someone would do such a thing.  Have you ever heard of anything like that happening.  Not very nice if it did, IMO

No offense to Mrs McGowan, but if she does win, it just goes to show what a farce our system is. The fact that someone can get in with 32% of the vote, over someone with 45%, is ludicrous.

She didn't sit in Parliament because she said that were no official "stolen" children, IIRC.

If I were a politician at the time, there's no way that I would have sat in there either.

What we progressives say doesn't have to make sense. All that matters is that the people believe it to be true.
