Steve Bracks sacked !!

The libbos take no prisoners !!

Never mind, Steve will have to rely on his generous parliamentary pension to live on.

Quote:
Steve Bracks says Coalition has stripped him of consul-general role in New York

Former Labor premier Steve Bracks says his appointment as consul-general in New York has been revoked by the incoming Abbott government.

Mr Bracks was appointed to the role in May and was due to start work in the US financial capital this week.

But he issued a statement this morning saying he was informed last night of the decision by Foreign Minister-elect Julie Bishop to strip him of the role.

"The Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs informed me last night following a briefing he had with the Foreign Minister-elect, The Hon Julie Bishop, that she would be revoking my position as Australia's consul-general in New York," the statement said.

"I wish the Foreign Minister-elect every success with her new appointment for this position and I will be making no further comment at this time."

Mr Bracks says he intends to find work in Australia's funds management sector.

Outgoing Labor minister Tanya Plibersek says the decision to strip Mr Bracks of the role is extraordinary.

"I was very disappointed to hear [this was] the first act of an incoming foreign minister; it's both petty and vindictive," she said.

"This was an appointment announced in May, well before we went into the caretaker period, and Steve Bracks is eminently qualified to serve as consul-general.

"When we came into government in 2007, Amanda Vanstone was allowed to complete her term in Italy.

"But even on top of that, we appointed both Tim Fischer and Brendan Nelson to represent Australia overseas.

"We considered that they were suitable people to do so. We acted in a bipartisan way, in the best interests of Australia.

"I just think the pettiness of it is extraordinary."

Outgoing immigration minister Brendan O'Connor says the decision was "very vindictive" and a "grave mistake".

"It's an insight into Mr Abbott's view of power and authority to actually revoke the appointment of a very popular and extraordinarily competent and capable person," he told Sky News.

"It really doesn't augur well for this government if this is the way in which they're going to act.

"It's a sign to me that power is about handing out goodies to your mates, not being magnanimous and I think that's a concern."

Turnbull says decision to appoint Bracks was unprecedented

Senior incoming minster Malcolm Turnbull has defended the decision.

Mr Turnbull said the Labor government's decision to appoint Mr Bracks just before the caretaker period came into effect was unprecedented.

"I think the decisions to appoint people to positions, a number of positions, including diplomatic positions, literally on the eve of the beginning of the caretaker period, with the appointment to take effect after the date of the election, or around the date of the election, was also unprecedented," he said.

Former Victorian Liberal premier Jeff Kennett says Ms Bishop was not acting vindictively when she removed Mr Bracks from the position.

"Steven was a political appointment made a time when the election had been called, although a long time in advance," he said.

"It's always been said and Julie Bishop has indicated that this appointment, if he doesn't take up the job before the Coalition was elected, would not go ahead.

"This was a political appointment by a person who was still very political, was involved in this campaign, who hadn't taken up his post."

Incoming attorney-general George Brandis says the Coalition disagreed with the timing of Mr Bracks's appointment.

"Mr Bracks's credentials for the New York post having been a state premier were not obvious to us," he said.

"We weren't consulted about it, it was a decision made at the very end of the government when the consultation requirement was in place."

Give Bracks a Myki card.

Stuff him in the Nth Sth dust pipe line.

And fire him at the De-sal plant.

You need to make up your ideologically retarded mind about what you want to complain about lack of action or too quick action ?

Given Bracks was clearly a political appointment and now on the wrong side ..... the Libs are 100% right to think this guy can not be trusted. Looks like SOP to me.

Looks like another one of your many many non-issues.

Also if you think Abbott is going to be a big failure why on earth do you want to stop him doing anything ?

Abbott might want to be careful about how he goes about making his appointments.  He wont be PM forever and the next one might extend him the same courtsey.

he has 9 years to worry about that.  And the difference is that this one was a barely pre-election appointment for a job that started AFTER the election.  It was political cynicism.

It was still an appointment made two months before the election was called, and they had every right to do it.

Abbott should be careful about getting personal.  Bit hard to get support when you go around pulling the trigger on people, even more so when you dont control both houses.  You would think losing the last election would have taught him he needs to learn to get people on side, not going around getting people offside.

Hmmm... lets imagine that Labor doesn't routinely sack the appointments of previous govts and often those already in place and doing the job.... or we can face the facts.  When Rudd came to power he did that plus he also cancelled a number of contracts simply because Howard had put them in place.  The earthworks around Medindie lakes were one example - to save water by reducing evaporation.  Rudd cancelled them and 6 years later has still not done anything about it.

Yes retiring on a pension of several hundreds of thousands a year would be devastating for Abbott.

Maybe he could move to the bogan state and buy a 1.8 million dollar house in SA ..... Next to Gillard's ????

I am sure Gillard would love to wake up to seeing Abbott running around in his budgie smugglers

THE new Abbott Government has not even been sworn in but its nasty side is already on show with the sacking of New York Consul General in waiting former Victorian Labor Premier Steve Bracks.

Foreign Minister-elect Julie Bishop's first act as Australia's chief diplomat was to order her departmental head Peter Varghese to call Bracks and tell him that his appointment to the plum diplomatic post had been revoked.

Bracks was given the job in May by the former Gillard Government before it entered the caretaker period for the September election.

The fact that Labor had left ex-Howard Government minister Amanda Vanstone in Rome and had appointed two former senior coalition politicians, Tim Fischer (the Vatican) and Brendan Nelson (Brussels) to prominent diplomatic jobs, clearly counts for nothing.

Attorney General-elect George Brandis explained the Bracks decision away in typical lofty language saying that his credentials for the New York job "were not obvious to us".

It is doubtful that a non-Italian speaking Amanda Vanstone or the Catholic hat wearing former deputy prime minister and farmer Tim Fischer were especially qualified either, but they were still appointed by their political foes.

Both sides of politics are guilty of using plum diplomatic postings, and the vast array of perks that accompany them, to look after old political mates. John Howard elevated it to an art form.

The Howard Government’s record of political appointments

If the Abbott Government is drawing a line under these jobs for the boys and girls and reserving these important jobs for professional diplomats, then it will be applauded. If, on the other hand, it intends to sack all Labor appointees and put their own lackeys in places such as New York, London and Washington, then it will leave itself wide open to charges of hypocrisy and petty vengeance
