How much is the fine?

Apparently it's $20, but I'm yet to hear of anyone being fined.

I haven't voted in at least six elections and I've never been fined.

I just don't think the AEC have the staff or the care to prosecute people,  besides they'd more than likely lose if it went to court.  Excuses, excuses, excuses.....forgot, broken car, mental illness, depressed, just plain sick all day.

Imagine jamming up the courts with 3.3 million cases, imagine the cost to the AEC.

Whether it's compulsory or not I'll do what I want to do, not what I'm forced to do......go democracy!

If true, it reinforces the need for compulsory voting. Perhaps we need some high profile enforcement.

On the contrary, it's a good argument for compulsory IQ tests and English language competence testing ~~ and voting being optional.

What the hell are voting instructions doing being printed in a score of different languages?

Any immigrant who hasn't taken the trouble to learn the native language sufficiently to understand the 'How To' vote instructions in English should forfeit the right to decide which party should rule this nation.

Correction: 3.3 million botched the voting papers. They voted, but didn't do it right.

You were right the first time Herb.

Not informal, that will be a staggering number too, count me in on that one. There wasn't a name on the paper that I could put the number 1 beside.

Australian Electoral Commission show only 11.4 million of the country's 14.7 million registered voters cast a ballot

Might be time to increase the fine to $500 and make it something the AEC actually enforces more.  The worse possible law is one that is routinely ignored.

The fine was a wishy washy attempt to scare people into succumbing to big brother. I doubt many knew what it was on Saturday, so increasing it won't make any difference.

The AEC will just have to admit that an increasing number of people are of the opinion that the major parties suck.

"would you vote for that rabble"?

Apparently plenty decided not to.

I reckon if you made the fine for not voting a thousand bucks you would get a 99% turnout.

Needless to say that 99% of those botching their votes would have been Labor voters from the ethnic communities. Language difficulties.

And no doubt some of the papers were filled in incorrectly because it's not all that easy to see what you're doing while you're wearing a burqa.

Cool

And let's not forget that there is a sizeable number in our Muslim community who believe that democracy is a blasphemy against Allah.

They would have deliberately vandalised their voting papers in protest against our secular and godless political options.

source???  With 14.5 million registered voters does that mean 3.3 million are unregistered or that 20% of registered voters didn't vote?

20% did not see fit to cast a ballot. That says a lot about the morons on offer. That is a huge amount.

This figure includes moaning Yarpie offshore accountants.

Let's hope Tony brings back conscription.

Wow, that's dumb, even for you. Lets see 476 thousand Muslims in the country, over 50% Are children, that's 238 thousand of which 50% would be men, that's 119 thousand  women at best which only around 30percent wear the burka. So at best 36 thousand and how many of them made mistakes? wow, you really do put the dumb in dumbass. Roll Eyes stupidity is alive and well while fools that think like you are allowed to breath.

I reckon whatever the fine, it would be too hard to prove in a court of law.

Do you really think it would be worth employing the extra staff needed to follow up on 3.3 million people?

Hypothetical

I send away for postal vote

The AEC never gets the returned forms

It would be hard to prove that the return mail didn't get lost by Australia Post or lost/misplaced/incorrectly handled by the returning officer.

I'd have eye witnesses to back up my case.

Even if they said they'd confiscate my house, my car and my grandkids, I'd call their bluff.

yeah, nup

If you are not registered and trust me it is easy enough to to avoid, they won't know you exist, and won't bother trying to track you down so the fine is pointless

Look be happy with your felllow masturbators and leave the rest of us out of your fascist utopia

If it's really a problem, maybe we should increase the fine for not voting?

Maybe? As one of them Id say likely Grin

Look, enough of you sheeple herded off to the polls to reinforce the nanny state mentallity, so be happy with that effort.

But, good to see 3.3 million of us treat the voting system with the contempt it so richly deserves

Uh, y wouldn't you have voted ldp if u think we have become nanny state?

I understand a person not voting because
a) they don't care either way and aren't informed
b) their ideology is not represented.

But it seems yours is.  So what's the problem?  If you want to change something about this country, do it by voting for the party that has your ideology.
