yep.  its like the carbon tax.  they just want to destroy themselves by reminding us all of the promises they broke.

Have you and Maqqa been smoking grow-your-owns?  Roll Eyes

we've been 'smoking' the alluring scent of victory.  not just govt but no carbon tax, no mining tax and no stupid FTTH NBN

Update 11 October

They aimed for $15,000. When I checked, they were headed for $25,000. Nine days ahead of time!

Looks like those who deny this is an issue are further off the planet that even I realised.

Quote:
The next 60 days are critical. Turnbull's sacked the NBN Co board, appointed a new chairman and is so far refusing to meet with us face-to-face -- but we know he's watching public opinion closely as he conducts a full review of Australia's broadband future.

More than a quarter of a million people -- 250,000 Australians -- have signed the petition to protect our NBN. Since then, thousands of letters, phone calls, and tweets have helped make the NBN one of the most talked about issues in the country.

But that alone won't save the NBN.

If Turnbull keeps refusing to meet with us, let's take the message to him in a way he simply won't be able to ignore -- by taking out front-page ads in his local newspaper that lands on his desk every morning, right when he's reviewing the NBN papers.

Can you chip in a few dollars to help take our campaign for the NBN right to Malcolm Turnbull's desk as he begins the 60 day broadband review?

This is what I know can make a difference. And exactly what you all suggested we need to do in the survey: every one of us doing our bit to make sure he knows exactly how much the Australian public want fast fibre-to-the-home broadband.

Doing the sums, it'll cost around $15,000 to take out a front-page ad in Malcolm Turnbull's paper the Wentworth Courier. That means if just 5,000 of us chip in a few dollars each we can put the ad in the paper just as the NBN review starts -- and any extra funds mean we'll take this message to the electorates of new marginal seat Liberal MPs too.

Click here to donate now on the crowd-funding page we've set up for the campaign. It's secure and only takes a few minutes.

Thanks,

Alex, Nick and the Save the NBN team.

P.S. It won't be easy, but with each of us chipping in where we can I know we can start shifting Turnbull on how much fibre-to-the-home he rolls out. If you can, click here and chip in a few dollars to keep the campaign going.

you drongos are SO out of your depth against Turnball.  not only is he smarter richer and more informed than you lot, he is actually the one making the decisions.

The chances of the Coalition putting the interests of the nation first are slim, that's undeniable. Which is least futile; trying to change their treacherous policy, or failing to make the attempt?

As Edmund Burke said: Quote:
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Is Turnbull smarter? Intelligence is a multi-faceted thing. On the evidence of your behaviour, he's evidently succeeded in deceiving the most feeble minds in Australia. I guess that indicates of a sort of intelligence.

Is he richer? Apparently so, though you'd need access to his personal finances to be certain.

Is Turnbull more informed? He's a lawyer and merchant banker who once invested in an Internet company. What evidence do you have that he knows anything relevant to the NBN?

Is he making the decisions? It seems to me that he's doing what he's told.

Update 16 October

They've already passed the $50,000 mark. It looks like even the rabid-right The Australian has changed its tune. Could it be that opposing FTTP was no more than an election gimmick?
Quote:
Wow. It took just a matter of hours to smash through our original fundraising goal to put an ad in Malcolm Turnbull's local paper. Now -- we've just hit $40,000!

It's been an incredible response. Our efforts have even been featured in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian -- and supporters from WA have put together this great video about the campaign so far.

We're working to book hard-hitting ads that will land on Malcolm's desk in the coming weeks -- now, can we up the ante? If we manage to hit $50,000 we'll work to extend our campaign into the most important electorates across the country, employing someone to organise events across marginal seats -- helping convince MPs to start speaking up for more fibre-to-the-premises, both in parliament and in their party room.

Can you chip in a few dollars towards a coordinated on-the-ground campaign asking marginal seat MPs to take our petition to Canberra? Click here to donate.

We know we won't turn everything around with one ad, or one event. But with local events across the country, in the most politically strategic areas, we can help convince MPs to champion fibre-to-the-premises and lobby Turnbull for more to be rolled out nationally. And that's what we can absolutely win.

Marginal MPs are the canaries in the coalmine for Cabinet Ministers -- when they chirp, Cabinet listens -- because it’s those MPs holding onto their seats that keeps them in government. And once Malcolm’s seen our ad in the newspaper on his desk, we need his phone to be ringing hot from each of his colleagues calling to say they need him to deliver - because Australian’s are asking for more fibre to the premises.

Can you chip in a few extra dollars to help hit $50,000 and help push our campaign for the NBN to the next level?

Thanks for all that you’re doing,

Alex, Nick and the Saving the NBN team.
P.S. If you’ve already contributed, thanks so much! Make sure you check out the great video put together for the fundraiser here -- share it with friends, and if you can, chip in a few more dollars for this next stage.

what a moronic campaign.  turnball wont even read the local paper (who does???)  and turnball is the type who will be convinced by fact, by a better deal.  THOSE are the areas to convince him.  to date, this campaign has had none of that at all.

He needs a genuine argument.  You are giving him a well-funded tanty and nothing else.

Update 22 October

It’s starting. After thousands of people contributed to our people powered fundraiser, we’ve taken the first steps in the next phase of this campaign.

From tomorrow morning, our first ad will be in thousands of newspapers across Malcolm Turnbull’s electorate. And it’s only the beginning.

Because of the enormous success of the fundraiser, we’re doing a lot more planning to make sure the campaign really cuts through. We’ve teamed up with creatives and campaigners and there’ll be more announcements soon - including our plan for targeting marginal seats, the ones we know act as the thermometers of government.

To make sure our message is getting through to as many places as possible, check out the ad below and click here to share it with friends on Facebook to make sure it spreads across the web as well as on Turnbull’s desk.

...

In just a few short weeks, we’ve all taken a lot of action together, and Malcolm Turnbull has been responsive. He’s still not letting the public into the review process though, and he still hasn’t acknowledged that most Australian’s want Fibre to the Premises.

This ad is the beginning of the next chapter in the story of the fight to save the NBN. Click here to share our ad and help that fight.

Thanks so much for helping to make the difference - we know, with your help, we can show Malcolm Turnbull that Australian’s want the right NBN for our nation's future.

An account from someone who has been through the mill:
Quote:
... We now have a full FTTH connection thanks to NBNCo and Exetel.
We got a Single Mode fibre connection and associated ONT all done for $50.
They even installed the gear directly into our upstairs home office and we
were back on the Internet again in a day.

We also just converted our PSTN phone to a VOIP account, also with Exetel.
We also got to keep our phone number so that was something.  I have to
say that initially scoping NBN services was a bit confusing, but I decided
to go with Exetel as they seemed to have a good rep and don't filter or
cut service ports like other ISP's.  The catch is that you are basically on
your own regarding support other than typical infrastructure issues upstream.
But once we selected a provider, getting connected etc was simple enough.

I am considering doing some "consulting" around getting subscribers on the
NBN, as I believe there is a short term market to assist in getting connected.
Although I found the setup etc initially confusing, I didn't have trouble,
but I suspect many people would, so perhaps there is something can be done
there.  We got a 100/40 connection.  It is quite fast, but we don't notice
the speed bump much given the latency on many websites, but where I was
pulling down a multi gb file, it was clear the performance is there. Likewise
pushing a package from home up to my work desktop over SSH/SCP is way
fast - 100Mb in a few minutes, not several cups of tea etc....

ONT=Optical Network Terminator, I believe. More information is available from NBNco.

PSTN=Public Switched Telephone Network (the old-style 'phone).
VOIP=Voice Over Internet Protocol ('phone over the Internet - full optical improves reliability; higher speed improves quality).

Looks like FttH would have been faster, in both senses. Might be cheaper too, given the reported state of Telstra's copper.

Coalition's FttN network unlikely to start rolling out before 2015

Supratim Adhikari 15 Nov, 11:01 AM

The Coalition government’s planned Fibre to the Node (FttN) network is unlikely to start rolling out before 2015, potentially delaying its timetable of providing download speeds of between 25 and 100 megabits per second by the end of 2016 and 50 to 100 megabits per second by 2019.

The proposed FttN network will require the installation of approximately 50,000 to 60,000 nodes and a source told Technology Spectator that at best NBN Co could get 200 nodes rolled out a week.

With the rollout at scale expected to start around early 2015, it could take NBN Co six years to roll the FttN network out at 200 nodes a week

It is understood that the 200 nodes a week figure was flagged by senior British Telecom executive Mike Galvin, who recently spent some time in Australia to advise NBN Co’s senior management and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

NBN Co is currently conducting FttN trials (in lab) and field trials for Fibre to the Basement (FttB) services and the nodes won’t commence until next year.

Commencement of the actual rollout is dependent on a number of factors – the selection of the equipment (kit) vendor, the all-important Telstra renegotiation and the ACCC’s approval.

And we slowly sink to become the poor white trash of Asia.

Be lucky to get up to 25mbps from this Lib schemozzle. MDUs might be a bit better off (but they are not FTTN anyway) except those who have copper even thinner than Telstra’s.

It will be patch upon botch, the copper will cost $30Bn to buy and Telstra will get that if they have to negotiate for three years—no wonder they and LNP govts acted to sabotage the rollout..

Reckon I might suggest to my council that they apply to Google to have gigabit FTTH rolled out, only way I will see decent speeds.

And this is all to thwart a policy, a brilliant policy, just because it was introduced by Labor? Aren’t we supposed to have the adults back in charge? Have seen no sign of that yet!

I wonder if Turncoat has bought shares in TPG, iiNet or Telstra? Bet he is benefitting financially from his crap policy (cherry picking, FTTN over Telstra’s crap copper.)

That is why I do not take part in taking out ads in Turncoat’s local paper etc.

Have to make him want to roll out the real FTTH NBN. . .something like 4K TV might do it—don’t deprive the bogans of their telly!

The Nationals are a disgrace of a Party—letting down their constituents who would have been one of the major beneficiaries of the real NBN. Hell, rural councils were co–paying to get the NBN! Not only that—Bananaby and Fiona Nash designed something very, very similar to the real NBN. Knowing Howard wasn’t interested in infrastructure (only in pork barreling and middleclass welfare to buy elections) they just filed their plan in Page House. They should be fighting to keep the real NBN but haven’t fought for anything in decades.
