NBN progress?
Sep 17th, 2013 at 11:47am

Change.org

See below for an update from Nick on the petition ...: "The Liberal Party of Australia: Reconsider your plan for a 'FTTN' NBN in favour of a superior 'FTTH' NBN"

... -

On Friday, after a quarter of a million people signed our petition, Malcolm Turnbull responded on his blog, and gave me a call.

We spoke about the different NBN options available, and I made it clear that there is a ground swell of Australians, from all sides of politics, who want to see him reconsider how he deals with this.

I was a little frustrated as he seemed to suggest that we don’t understand.  He suggested we wait, read his report, and then we’d get it.

I’m not sure that he understands.

Today, Mr Turnbull's been confirmed as Minister. The coalition seem to think that winning the election was the end of debate, but I think it was the beginning. Clearly this is a deeper issue than I, or Mr Turnbull, really imagined.

I’ve started the conversation with him, but I need your help to continue it.  We need him to see that people are asking him to engage and be open about the future of the NBN.  Will you share this image, and tag Minister Turnbull, asking this government to be the kind we were promised - one that listens?

The coalition need to know we want more from them.  It’s fair that we expect them to engage, to listen. That’s what they pledged in the lead up to the election, and when they won.

It has been a promising week.  To be honest, when I started this petition, I thought it would be great to get 1000 signatures. But every day now, more and more Australians are signing on and asking the government to engage.  Clearly, we’ve started something really big.

We need to use this petition as the first step in a much bigger campaign - can you help take the next step?

Thanks

Nick

P.S. It’s been great to see so many people talking about how to get the new government to listen to us.  If you have an idea or a skill to contribute to the campaign, email: nbnpetition@gmail.com and let me know.  Also, I’ll be offline for a couple of days, so I’m asking my friend Alex to help out, if there’s news to report, he’ll email on my behalf while I’m away.

What they really need is a petition that reads "I voted coalition and I want a FTTH NBN".  Perhaps that'll wipe Turnbull's smirk off and make them realise what kind of mandate they really have.

Turnbull's blog post is political claptrap, but the comments are worth reading.

What's the current cost of the NBN?  $60 Billion dollars?

Ok 250,000 people signed the petition.

If each of you people that signed the petition donate $250,000 towards the establishment cost of the NBN there'd be no need to flay us poor taxpayers.

Do YOU have a spare 250 Grand?????

Not quite sure what you're on about here. Why should individuals pay for public infrastructure? Isn't that why we have taxes - to equitably share the burden of such costs?

You've got it wrong..Australia should never have invested in infrastructure because its very expensive.
We know we would all be better off if this country remained without roads, sewerage, reservoirs, pipelines, universities, schools, hospitals, housing, communications etc etc.
A few goat tracks crisscrossing the country should be all we ever needed and think of the money we would've saved over the last few hundred years ..we would all be debt free and filthy rich  Cheesy

Actually I got a better idea. Not lowering  the company tax rate and increasing it to what we all pay.  Reduce the numerous and outlandish number of tax deductions they give to business. Make companies and business pay a minimum amount of tax no matter how many deductions they claim and bring back the original resources tax So that you blokes stop flaying the poor taxpayer and we can get a decent NBN for the benefit of all not JUST YOU.

Equitable share? That's hogwash.

The majority of tax is paid by a minority of people.

The lion's share of the cost of Govt / infrastructure is already being paid for by a small minority.

The top 9% of people pay 49% of income tax
The top 40% of people pay 90% of income tax
The bottom 60% pay 10% only
The bottom 25% pay zero, not a zac, effall.

NBNs are ok for most because they don't have to pay for it. Sad

If you're saying there's inequity in that, then you'll have to point it out.

and there we have it, folks!  they want all the goodies but don't want to pay for it.  And when they mention 'taxes', they mean other people's taxes.
