For me it's seeing the word 'than' replaced by 'then'. It's almost a convention now in the USA. To think that there are people out there that don't know there are two different words. What kind of thoughts must they have? Undecided

I don't like to admit this, but I saw some of the Channel 7 "News" tonight.

They reported an "ATM machine" that was blown up.

Yes, an "ATM machine".

Well, in the present state of "development" of our language, I can see "ATM machine" as acceptable.
Don't forget this is a living language. As a conservative, I can prefer that it be dead and not change but I am not a Cnut either (be careful if you quote me), especially after watching The Vikings.
(Oh no, that's not relevant, Cnut was a Dane, much more civilised.

The Concise OED defines a near miss as "not quite a hit, but close enough to cause damage, esp in bombing.".

How?

It's totally unacceptable.

Is "AGW warming" acceptable?  No.

Is "DOA arrival" acceptable? No.

Is "ABC corporation" acceptable? No.

Is "ACT territory" acceptable? No.

How is "ATM machine" acceptable?

Undecided

Phrases, words & terminology become acceptable by usage. I don't know if this is widely used but I can readily see it might become so.

Can we expect to hear you say "ACT territory" in the future?

Or possibly, "ABC corporation"?

How about "Automatic ATM"?

If not, why not?  If "ATM machine" is acceptable (which it quite simply is not), why aren't the other examples I've provided acceptable too?

You've already asked those questions greg. There is no logic about how or why one phrase may come into usage when another doesn't.
I don't want an argument, I just offer an opinion.

I think I do this. Well, more accurately - I think I may have done this in the past. Not anymore, buster.
